A while back, I got my hands on early 4x10 cabinet without the speakers. I opted to buy some new Weber speakers rather than taking my chances on finding good D110Fs. My new speakers finally show up along with some issues. I tried loading the top row first only to notice that things were very tight. I cheated the studs over a little bit and drilled the holes in the speakers a little larger. Things were tight, very tight, but they fit. I moved on to the bottom row only to find that there was no way in hell I could shoe horn my others speakers in there.

So, I had three options. One, I could find JBLs and have four brand new Webers collecting dust. Second, I could pull off the grill cloth and make new stud holes. Last choice, and the best, I could build a new baffle! So that's what I did.

I tried to stay true to the original, along with some improvements. I moved the speaker holes apart so that things would fit properly. I used Birch plywood instead of the cheap stuff. I also used these t-nut things that you hammer into the baffle instead of studs.

So, here it is as of now. My speakers fit fantastic now. I only have a few things left now. I need to install the wood strip that the Kustom badge screws to. I have to drill out the stud holes for the cabinet, paint it flat black, and have the grill cloth tacked on.

Hey ellum68,
It looks great.
I used to have a few of the K100 2x10 combos and I found that the earlier ones had a little tighter bolt pattern that the later ones. I had to drill out the holes on the speakers to get them to fit.

are those Webers the "Californian" model? I 've been wanting to buy some for my SC150 4x10 rigs... I didn't realize I'd have a baffle problem.. man would I be frustrated if I couldn't just swap em out with the eminence that currently in there.. I'm hoping that the SC combos might not have the problem that the older 2x15 sized 4x10 cab like yours has?

I have a bit different problem a couple years back I wanted to load some Eminence Kappa series drivers into some 2x15 cabs but the frame on those kappa monsters is too thick and the old kustom mounting bolts were not long enough to get through and have any thread left. I looked for some extenders and wound up just getting the gama series...don't know that Bud ever imagined his old cabs seeing new drivers like that 40 years later.

Yup, they're California's. Those things are rated at 60w each; This cabinet should be able to take quite a beating! I can try to help you a little bit. My speakers measured out at 10 1/8" O.D. The top set of speakers were just barely overlapping, but I got them to fit. The bottom row had a little 1/4" of overlap. I'm not sure how your SC is laid out, but I bet it would work if it didn't have JBLs originally. JBLs have frames that are squared off, so they'll fit tighter. I will post a measured drawing (both original and modified) in a week or two.

The mouning studs on vintage Kustoms where sized to handle the era`s thick mounting flange on JBL cast frame drivers, but those kappa frames are monster, they are the same ones Eminence uses on the 1250 watt kilomax drivers!

Okay, it's pretty much done! I have to reattach the insulation and put back in the center board and button it all back up. If anyone is interested, I can post a drawing of all the dimensions if you want to make your own.

The speakers look like they sit behind the outer frame of the amp in the last pic, but they don't.
