Hi,

i am from Austria, near Vienna/Europa. Nearly one year ago I got interest in vintage and then I found Kustom.
The only one I got in Europa - and I look every day in eBay, where 2 4x12 cabinets in very bad condition. I have repaired them and give in Monacor SP305i Speakers, because there were none.
I have imported a Kustom 200 and a Mixer III from the USA.
So I have my first Kustom gear and much people find it great. If you want you can take a look at http://www.austropop.at/Vintage-Thunderbird.htm
The T-Bird is not mine. Rolling Eyes
Now I've been asked for next January to use that gear as PA for 500 people. I think, that dosent work really fine...
I need more and there is nearly no chance to get it in Europa and the shipping cost from USA to Austria are horrible. (If theres someone in Europa who want to sell it, please contact me. Or if you know a good shipping.)
So I want to build a "new" PA. It should look like the Frankenstein und should be use as PA.
Please, I need all Informations I can get of dimensions, how it looks at the backside, where I can buy name plate, caster ,ports, jack plate, handles, grille cloth...
What speakers do you think are optimal?
Maybe someone can send me photos of all sides. The Backside is very importend.

Thanks a lot!

Best regards from Greifenstein near Vienna
Ricca

Hi Ricca.
Welcome on board with the rest of us Kustom Krazys!
Nice job om the speaker cabinets, and yes you are right, those 8-12 inch speakers will not fill a room that is large enough to hold 500 people all too well.
The thing you will need most will be to have more low frequency power, so here is a suggestion for you.
Getting the parts you will need to make a kustom, like name plates and handles will be painfully hard, so I would suggest to you that you make two 2-15 ported cabinets and cover them to match what you have now, then you can get a electronic crossover and a kicking 800 watt or so power amp to drive the 4 15s and fill that 500 person hall quite nice!
What do you think?

P.S
You would drive the seperate power amp with the record output of the K200( or I can tell you how to make a small circuit to tap signal off of the 200s speaker output jacks)and also use your current cabinets for mids and highs.

Hi,

thanks for your answer and that you dont say, i'm a complete idiot. Rolling Eyes
My thoughts at the moments are to buy new Kustom 215H and make old one out of this. Maybe buy 2 410H too.
What dou you think?
If i cancle two of the 10" out of the box, make it a little shorter, it looks nearly like the Frankenstein.

Yes, it will basicly look like a frank head, and you will have enough covering to make a new bottom for it, but I just do not know how you are planing to make a new plexiglass face plate/control.
I can give you the cabinet dimension off of my frank head if you like?

Hi,

please give me the dimensions and if possible, send me pictures to office@austropop.at
Where are the plexiglass face plate? On the amp or on the backside of the cabinets? I dont want to make amp heads and I dont know how the Frankensteins cabinets look at the backside.
At the moment Kustom is testing the speakers, if I can use them as PA. I never had seen such a good service. Very great indeed.
If that system works like I need it, I will take PA amps with 2000 Watt/4 Ohm for each side.

I am not sure now what you want to do, as you posted that you do not want to make amp heads, and a frank style kustom is a head.
The speaker cabinets that went along with the frank era heads do not look any different than a latter k200 serise speaker cabinets, but for their smaller size and lack of port tubes.
On ebay right now is a listing for a black frank head, item number 290176949348. The seller has it listed wrong, he has it listed as a k100, but you can get a good look at what the back of the head looks like from that listings pictures.
The back is a metal panel of the chassie that has the output and regulator transistors on it.
It is covered by a steel grill that has the output jack(s) on it.
The front panel on all 60s to early 70s kustoms is plexiglass, it id stenciled on the back with the logo and control labeling and then sprayed black and then mounted to the front metal panel of the chassie.
I hope this info helps!

OK , so you want to make just the 2-10 inch horn cabinet, and the 2-15 cabinet, right?
I can not help you with the size of the 2-10 cab as I do not own one,but all of the frank speaker cabinets matched the width of the frank head, which is some 1 inch or so less than the latter k200 heads.
I can post you the width of the cab tomorrow if someone else here does not help you before then.
