Just scored two vintage Kustom 100 cabs with CTS speakers in them. An old woman across the street from me, who just sold her house asked me if I'd be interested in smome speakers that her son had left behind and didn't want any more. When I saw that they were old Kustom 100 cabs, I immediately asked her how much she wanted for them. She said she was just going to throw them away and that I could have them. Being an honest guy, I told her that they were vintage and could be worth something. Once again, she said she needed to clean the house out ASAP and couldn't be bothered. And that since I shoveled her driveway a few times for her, I could take them and get what ever I could for them. After asking her again if she wanted to reconsider, she insisted that I take them with her good wishes. Wheeled them across the street and immediately hooked an amp up to them. They're both still alive and well. My question is, how do I tell if the cabs are for guitar, bass or PA?

If the speakers are actually CTS speakers, I'm presuming that is what the speaker jack on the back says, they are bass cabs. Those cabs had 2 12" or 1 15" speaker. In either combination, they were bass cabs. The 2x12 cab has great response. It is pretty dull for guitar though. And the 15' version is very dull. Definitely a speaker replacement there.

How many speakers are in these cabinets? I just realized that a pair might have been 4x10 or 4x12 columns and if they are then they are PA cabs. The CTS speakers in those are much lighter duty than the 2x12 or 1x15 gitar/bass cabinets. They will work well for guitar however.

And, of course, the MOST critical question: What color are they?
congrats on your find, and kudos for not taking advantage of her and trying to pay her a fair price!

Well, first and foremost, 137 is a CTS speaker. Then the large square magnet on a 12" speaker does also identify a CTS speaker. Those are bass cabinets and very nice ones for a lot of uses. They work as very smooth PA cabinets and do work well for bass. The question I have is why would your neighbor have 2 cabinets? They were never sold as a pair but as 2 separate amps. Where are the heads? Either way, you done good! Also, you were very considerate to offer after she refused. That is the way to do business. Congratulations.

Why two? Who knows? Where is the head(s)? Again, who knows? She said they belonged to her son who didn't want them any more and that she was just going to put them out for garbage collection if I didn't take them. As far as being nice is concerned, I'm no kid. I'm a grandfather myself. This woman is old enough to be MY mother. I also happen to know that the woman is quite comforable, financially speaking. But at my age, I still don't feel it's right to take advantage of people. Especially little old ladies.
