I think I brought this up a couple of years ago....but I FORGOT! Is it possible or practical to install a false 8 ohm load to one side of a 200 head to make the amp think it has a 4 ohm load and get the additional power and tone of the 4 ohm load while only using one 8 ohm cabinet? Next question....If the first question is possible, can a common vulgarian such as myself construct such a device? Many thanks! BC

Sure, you could do that, but instead of getting 60-or-so watts into the single 8ohm speaker, you'd be getting 50watts out to the speaker, and another 50 to your dummy load. Unfortunately, even with Kustoms, you don't get something for nothing.

I once had a friend ask if he could wire up a 100watt light bulb inline with the power cord of his 10-watt amp to make it a 100watt amp. I think we were about 11 years old at the time.

If you have 2 cabs with 8 ohm speakers, I can fax you a way to wire a double pole double throw toggle switch in each cab so that each cab by itself can run at 4 ohms, or both cabs can run at 8 ohms. The use of 4 speakers more than doulbes the volume compared to the increase in wattage from 8 to 4 ohms.

One minor thing you are not taking into consideration. That energy you are driving into your speaker is going into motion, that is moving your speaker. Any power diverted to an inanimate object, is just wasted power. The maximum power is 100 watts regardless of where it is going. Rodak is right, (should I know his name? Razz )You will get more power from one cabinet by itself, than sharing power with a resistor.

Thanks guys! I knew there had to be a catch....I just could not remember what it was. What I was really looking for was a way to fool the head into thinking that ONE 8 ohm cab was a 4 ohm. Now I know why I prefer 3x15s......they get closer to the 4 ohms ......and having the extra coneage closer to my 5'9" head also helps! BC

I keep explaining to other players that the vertical arrangement of Kustom cabinets aids in the aural (not oral) pleasure of the player. And you don't even need a condom. The other option for Fender or Mesa or Peavy players is to place the combo on a chair or slope it upward. That is why early Fenders had the legs on the side and the mounting brackets on Bassman and Showman piggy-back amps. Last time I checked, there were no ears on the back of my knees. Laughing

Hi BC. You could just put one 4 ohm speaker with a 100 watt rating in there and blast away at full power.
The 3x15 is cool looking to be sure. But you will have more power than the 3x15 by using one 2x15 tuned into a 1x15 in the above way. The other thing is that a 3x15 cab does not have enought chambered air volume for the reflex of its speakers nor enought port volume for them.
You could put a radio shack or any dummy speaker thats blown even in the top position or better yet make a removeable speaker plate out of plywood for the 2x15 cab. That will give your 1x15 a 2x15 cab with even more room to move. Not to mention being lighter by half the weight of the speakers. Plus you'd have the two 15 inch, 16 ohm speakers to put in some sub cabs for the Pa or whatever you need them for.
If you like the speaker nearer the top then mount the 4 ohm speaker in that position. In addition 4 ohm speakers are much easier to find especially in high power ratings than sixteen ohms.
Now you would you turn that thing down LOL..
