Hey Kustom Forum!

In the last 6 months, I have come across two K150-7 combos. One in Red Sparkle, and the other in Black (both T&R).
Trying to do research, I can't find any info online about the 70's 150 combos! Sad What gives?

If they are so prevelant in the market that I have found two in Indianapolis in the last 6 months, how come there isn't more info to be found?

Even Fjestad's Blue Book lists everything except this model....

They are so cool, I went ahead and bought both, but I would like to know SOMETHING about them!
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Congratulations on your find.

What are the serial numbers of each of your amps?

The K150 combo was made from about July 1970 to April 1972.

The 2x10 and 4x10 (K150-8) seem to be more common than the 2x12 (K150-7).

Thanks Les, but I'm still not seeing the models I have! I see the piggyback 150s, but mine are the combos. Even in the "Combo" section, I don't see them. Are they SC series? I don't think so...

The black 150's serial number is #64785. It's the latest acquisition, so I have it here handy.

I must just be missing them... Confused

Yes - it is in the SC combo brochure.
It is the 2-12J SC and 2-12A SC (J for Jensen, A for Altec).

The SC combo brochure was issued May 7, 1970.

My theory is that Kustom was changing from the K100 combos to the K150 combos a month or two from then and they wanted to put the new model in the brochure.
K150 combo production started about June/July 1970.

Evidently they were in a hurry on the K150 combo brochure - for the cover they used a K100 combo picture!

Well I found a sparkle Blue Combo 150K-7 in excellent condition.

My questions:
Is it normal for the amp to sound scratchy when played through? I have tried to shut down the reverb and Trem to see if I can get a cleaner sound. I did notice by turning the volume up it tends to become cleaner. So I need to get this in for a service or is it OK

I purchaed a vintage footswith off E bay, one button, it seems to swithc only between normal and loud ( lead ) What would be a correct footswith for this 150K-7 Combo ? I figured it would switch between clean and verb/trem like my fender deluxe reverb amp

The footswitch jack is a stereo 1/4" and using a single button footswitch will not turn off and on the reverb and the tremolo. Pushing it in all the way will turn off either the reverb or trem.

The combo K150 models used the same preamp boards as the K100 models, but the 150s where fitted with a new output stage and a choke in the power supply.
These changes made the 150s (both combo and heads versions) able to output a rock solid 75 watts RMS into a 8 ohm load.

If you amp sounds scratchy you could have a bad speaker,re-wiring/trying them one at a time can prove this out.

Thnaks for your input on my K150-7 scratchy sound. Regarding the speakers, what should be the proper brand or model speaker in this unit?

Also, when you mentioned re wiring the speakers, I admit to being a rookie on electronics can you be alittle more detailed on this process?

You are correct, this one button footswitch does exactly as you described.
Do you have any recommendations as to where to look for a two button switch? E Bay again? Hey will my Fender Deluxe Reverb two button work? Guess I could try, but I would prefer an original if possible.

Any 2 button pedal with a ERS 1/4" male jack will work. If you want original, they aren't cheap.

A easy way to test the amp/speakers is with another speaker cabinet.
if you remove the back panel of your amp you will see that on the bottom is one speaker output jack, you can unplug that and plug in another cabinet/speaker to check if the sound is still scratchy.
