I just bought a Blue K1005 PA head and speaker cabs. I had the head serviced by a local tech and it performs great. The speaker columns have 4 12" speakers. One speaker is blown and I do mean blown. Cone is gone. No sign if they are CTS, Jensens or what. They do have chrome dust caps and the following numbers on back of speaker magnet. 5812218 and 137 6806.
Can anyone tell me what brand and ohms? Everything appears original. Would I be better off just getting them reconed or just buying a new replacement?
Thanks.

The 4x12 columns are the only speakers I am aware of that are not 16 ohms. They use 4 8 ohm speakers in series-parallel to give 8 ohms for each column.

I have a pair of 4x12's that I installed JBL E120's in. They really put out more than the CTS's, weigh about 150 pounds each but are still very mid rangey. (rangey??) As a column and non ported to begin with, the low end frequency response is not very good even with the JBL's. But for clarity, WOW!! I doubt if the speakers will add more to the sound than the column can produce. You just want the look to be correct. Mismatched speakers, absolutely not! Go with the recone. I sold the 8 CTS's years ago. They also show up on Ebay all the time. If you have patience, you might find a deal there.

I agree with you on the look and sound. I brought the speaker to a local shop that recones and rebuilds, and deceided to have it reconed. They did a pair of Cerwin Vegas for me, a couple of years ago, and did a great job. The guy looked at the speaker and said, I know what this is, CTS's. I think I picked the right shop. I had the head repaired, they fixed the reverb, channel 2 was not putting out the power, the reverb foot switch plug had shorted out and replaced two transisters that had rusted off. I was surprised this guy had so many old electronic parts. The sound is so clean and clear. The reverb will just blow you away. This baby will set in my music room and not only look good, but serve as a good practice PA.
