What is the ACTUAL wattage on a Kustom K250 with all the bells and whistles? Also, can the be used with TWO 4x12's? Also, has anyone tried one out with a cab with Celestions? If so, how different was it? Thanks!

Hi. If you do a search here you can find a posting I did about 2 years ago when I tested the output of Kustom heads, but I will save you the trouble!
Your fully loaded K250 outputs its max wattage with a 4 ohm load, which will be 110 watts RMS. If it was the non-effect version it would pump out 117 watts RMS, are barely noticable change.
Into a 8 ohm load the wattage drops a fair amount, down to 81 watts RMS.Not too bad as compared to some other brand SS amps when you double the load impeadance!
Most 4 -12 cabs are 8 or 16 ohms. so either could be hook up to the amp with a Y cord made for speaker use( a regular Y cable made for line level signal will not last too long under speaker amperage drive)
The two 8 ohm cabs in use with Y cord(parallel) would place a 4 ohm load on the amp, 2 16 ohm cabs would be a 8 ohm load thru the same Y cord.
Some cabs have a switch to take it from 16 ohms to 8 ohms, but you did not state what you have.
Dependant on what the impeadance of the drivers are in the cabs in question you may be able to rewire them to get a different total cab impeadance.
For example, a 16 ohm cab with out a load switch, loaded with 4 8 ohm drivers can be rewire to be a 8 ohm cabinet.
I have played K250s and many other model Kustoms thru Celestion speakers and they sound great, at least to me.
The K250 has a wide frequency control range normally, and even more so if you use a short cord to jump your guitar into both channels.
The amp, or any amp will sound different tonally thru the same speakers when they are wired different as the not only changes the impeadance, but it changes the inductance load also which has a fair effect on tone.
More indutance will make for less chimmy highs and mellower bass.
One things for sure two 4-12 cabs wired for a 4 ohm load on that K250 head will make for a LOUD amp.

Thanks for the prompt and thorough reply! It's pretty decieving that the amp is rated at 250 watts in the old Kustom brochure. Where can I get a Y speaker cable? Will this damage the amp at all?

Radio shack may still carry a black plastic molded 1/4" male to two 1/4" female adapter, you could then hook up two 8 ohm cabinets which will place a 4 ohm load on the amp and give you all its rms wattage, or two 16 ohm cabinets for a 8 ohm total load which will give you about 80 watts rms.
You could also run single cabinets of 4, 8 or 16 impeadnaces, just note that with a 16 ohm load the amp will only output some 50 watts.
Most bigger better stocked music stores will carry a 1/4" tip/ sleeve Y cable made for speaker use, But it must be made for speaker use with un sheilded cable.
Any cables you look at that are 1/4" tip, ring, sleeve will not be for speaker use!

Thanks ALOT! As soon as I get the Y cable and a big muff I'll tell you how it sounds!

Thanks stevem for all the useful info!
I just purchased a Kustom 250-4 and I love it!
I'm running it into a 4x10 8ohm cab...so I think I'll get a y cable and run it into two 8ohm cabs as well... or I may look into rewiring my 8ohm cab to be a 4ohm...so I don't have to lug 2 cabs to gigs to get the optimum tone.

"The K250 has a wide frequency control range normally, and even more so if you use a short cord to jump your guitar into both channels."
How do you do this? I'm not sure I completely understand.

Thanks again for all the info!

-mike

Hey Mike, this is how I use the jumper method with my K250. I plug a small 3" patch cord into the top channel's top input and patch it into the bottom channel's top input - then I plug my bass into bottom input jack of the bottom channel.

I use the bottom channel for my Lows and the top channel for my Hi's and Mid's and adjust the volume of either channel accordingly.

Hope this helped some.
