Brian:
The speaker cabs are sealed with a black mastic (caulk) that can be quite sticky. Try pushing out the back panel by using a stick through the front ports. If your cab doesn't have open ports, then you'll have to try to carefully pry out the back at a corner seam.

Alrightythen, Pry off the back panels carefully with 2 flat head large screwdrivers trying not to dig in to much.
Once you get the covers off one of the best things to use to clean off the black goo is either GOO Gone or my favorite -Lighter Fluid. And while you have the backs open you might as well re-wire your speakers. That 30 year old wire is pretty brittle. Use 18 - 16 gage and you'll be Cool and good for another 30 years? Hey Ed What's Up? You Still old as ever?
What ever Steve says you should do it!
