Questions about a Kustom 200 and 2/15 Cab I Bought [message #6555]

Hi, first timer here. I have a few questions that i hope you guys could help me a little on. Firstly I just went out and bought my first kustom rig. It's a Kustom 200 head amp with a 2 by 15" speaker cabinet. They are finished in black naugahyde. The 200 has 2 channels, a bright and normal. I was wondering if you could tell me what bright means and what do the bright switches on it mean. Also it has 2 inputs, high and low for either channel and 4 knobs for each channel. they are treble, bass, volume and bright. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it, like can i put a footswitch through it, etc. Any responses are greatly appreciated!

Hello Brian. Sounds like you have a K200B-1. The amp will work fine for any use..guitar, bass, keys or whatever. Because these heads have no effects on them they were usually sold as bass amps....but it will work well for guitar also. The bright switches seem to cut some low frequency from the sound.....same as the high and low inputs on this model. I think the left (Bright) channel actually has a little treble boost to its sound. I play bass and use either one and adjust the tone controls for whatever I want. You can add effects pedals to this amp for guitar and they will amaze you!

If the cabinet is loaded with original speakers it should have CTS, Jensen, Altec or JBL loaded in it. CTS was a heavier speaker for bass as were the Altec 421s and JBL 140s. Jensens were voiced more for guitar as were Altec 418s and JBL 130s. Check the jackplate on the back of the cabinet to see if it is labeled. I always like to take the back off my Kustom cabs to see if any treasures were thrown through the ports!

They are CTS speakers, also, I was wondering if i could put my Kustom 100 head with the 4 inputs and 4 sets of 4 knobs, i think its a k-100 a-4 or somehting like that. just wondering if that would screw it up?

Hello. You are probably talking about a K100-A5. Which is a four input PA head with four channels with vol, treble, bass, and reverb controls. The minimum impedance on a K100 is 8 ohms, and your 2x15 is 8 ohms since the speakers are 16 ohms each in parallel; i.e. yes, you can use the head with that cabinet. Also noteworthy is that your K200 has a minimum impedance of 4 ohms, so you can always use a second 8 ohm cab if desired. Good luck and have fun!

The brite switch on kustom amps activate a boost circuit for the highs, and unlike fender and other amps of the era that just switch in a cap across the volume control and hence on those amps once you have the volume control past the halfway position the brite cap is out of the circiut, on a kustom the high end boost is on for the full range of the volume control.You also get some extra hiss on a kustom since this circuit is active and not just blocking some lows like on a fender amp.The 2 jacks on each channel of a non-effect kustom head(100s and 200s) are for tonal differnces. The low labled jack has a cap in serise to block some highs, the high labeled jack just goes right to the preamp.The non-effect equiped heads are all the same and can be used for guitar, bass or keyboards.They put out a little more clean head room then the effect heads since their powersupply is not feeding all the extra circuitry of a effect type head.
