200B-1 "Whooshing"/RF interference [message #1024] Tue, 13 November 2001 23:32 Go to next message

I just started playing again and brought my Kustom out of storage after 15 years. I am using my K200B-1 w/2X15 (4 0hm) cab as a guitar amp and I have a couple of questions. 1. Amp picks up foreign language radio. Only on "Bright" Channel. Usually only at night. I've tried a couple of suggestions - no luck. Does anyone know for sure if changing to a three-prong plug would help? 2. Amp makes LOUD "Whooshing"/"air" noise whenever any of the knobs on either channel is turned up past half-way. Were these things there before and I just didn't notice? Or is it because the amp is 30 years old and has been idle for the last 15 years? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I also have a "whooshing" sound on my K150-8 and wondered if you had made any progress in solving your problem. Any help is appreciated. Sure would like to find a schematic.

It appears that this is normal. See replies to my post under "Running amp with no load").

Okay guys, read this! I think this may help with th RF interference thing.... For REAL help on solving the RF interference issue, go to this link and click on the presentation http://www.musicplayer.com/CDA/Player/Main/1,2228,Lessons-Bassist-5000770,00.html Or read this: “Guitar cable connector corrosion may lead to radio frequency (RF) interference because the corrosion can create a crystalline structure that acts like a diode. A diode rectifies radio frequency signals into audio frequency (the principle behind crystal radios). If you are getting RF interference, try cleaning the contacts first with DeOxit, or if you’re desperate, a pencil eraser or anything that can scrape the metal VERY lightly (you don’t want to scratch off any plating). If the interference is cable related, cleaning will almost always fix the problem.”

Deb, Thanks for the tip and doing the research. I found a temporary fix by using a long cord and coiling in front of the amp. The way you found seems like a permanent solution and one that is not too difficult (Famous Last Words). I'll give it a shot. Thanks again.....Gene. P.S. Dumb question.....Are they talking about the contacts on the jack inside the amp? Or some other contacts?

Check your input and speaker jacks, and the plug ends of your cords as well.
