Replacement parts are always needed and after you buy a few Kustom heads and cabs you find out you need at least one handle and a knob or two. Both of these parts are not exact but close replacements......use them on the player rigs and most people will never know. Radio Shack sells rplacement knobs under part #274-416A that is very close and looks like what is used on the "new" Kustom heads. They also sell a smaller knob like the ones seen on the effects of the 250 heads. The knobs on my 4001 Rickenbacker basses look exactly like the old Kustom knobs on 200s......but if you order from them make sure they are not labeled volume and tone. I do not know their part numbers. Handles can be obtained from vibroworld.com under part #88-095222-005. These are clear instead of black plastic....but I have seen clear on 3 Kustoms and they were either original or had been replaced long ago! John Compton has used these and says they look good and fit very well.

Kustom is using an almost identical handle on the ne Tuck-N-Roll units; the only difference is that the black plastic insert is held in place with slotted screws rather than unslotted rivets. These are supposed to be available through Kustom Dealers and the price I was quoted by Kustom is $15/pair retail. As of 6/1/00 these are still not available to the dealers from Kustom. Kustom has advised that they are supplied by PHC Industries in Camden, NJ as part no. 153-PL (specify Chrome with black insert). Unfortunately, they do not generally stock these parts and require a minimum order of 100 handles. The cost however is a very attractive $2.35 per handle.

The Rickenbacker bass knobs that do NOT have any letters on the aluminum tops are no longer available... But, perhaps the ones with the lettering could be stripped of the letters......

Anyone looking for replacement knobs should try ALLPARTS #3248, and #3246. These are repro Rickenbacker bass knobs, and retail for an attractive $6.00 per pair. But while you're out, you'll need to stop by the hardware store and pick up a bottle of Acetone - you'll be needing it to remove the lettering from the top of the knobs. After a bit of rubbing you'll be left with exact copies of the elusive and coveted Kustom knob. jimm

Thanks Jimmy!!!! I kinda figured that somebody knew where to get them. The idea of using acetone to remove the printing on the knobs is a great idea, and I will be doing that soon to some Rickenbacker knobs. I needed some without printing for one of my model 3000 Rickenbacker basses (same as Kustom knobs) and had to settle for the ones with lettering, but now I can remove that thanks to your know how. Thanks!!

Thanks to Jimm and Deb for the ideas and research and labor. It is people like this that make this so much fun! Has anyone found the smaller knobs for the 250 folks? BC!

Guys, I found a cheaper place to buy knobs!!!! It's a set of FOUR for $7.50 from my friends at EM Shorts (Wichita Band) in Kansas. The Rickenbacker part number for the set of 4 are #03570. Then, you clean off the letters-- bingo, you have new knobs!! You can call them at 1-800-835-3006 and ask for Jon, and tell him that Deb Hart from Michigan told you to call! You can also email Jon at wbic@aol.com. Maybe a group of you guys could pool together and have them get them in quantity because the shipping would be a lot less that way!! Do I get a free blue for the idea????

There seems to be a lot of interest in the knobs here, so I did some research. It looks like the company that manufactures them is the Cosmo Corporation (great name, eh?) in Cleveland. These are the very same knobs that were used on the Minimoog synthesizers back in the 60's and 70's, and I knew that I'd stumbled across their company in the big Thomas Register listings ( a monster -size set of catalogs for manufacturers) when I was refurbishing a couple of my Minimoogs several years ago. Got out the "knobs" listings this morning and sure enough, there's a picture of what looks just like the Kustom/Moog fluted knob with the spun aluminum insert, along with all the other stuff they make (they're a molding company and make all kinds of molded bobbins and stuff as well as a ton of different types of knobs). Their sales rep is faxing me a catalog listing for this series, and I'll find out what the minimum order would be for buying some (they sell direct, no distributors, so I'm guessing that minimum would be at least a hundred knobs, maybe more). I'll be needing some, and it looks like others might also. These would be brand-new knobs without any silkscreening to remove, and I'll bet we can beat the Allparts price by quite a bit. Any interest in a group buy? I'll keep the list informed as I get more info. gh

When ya get the knob catalog, I'd be interested to hear if the small "250" knobs are available, although I wouldn't need anymore than 6 of those. FWIW, I could get by with 6 of the normal size as well.

Gary - You is the man! I have been trying to get thru to the Rickenbacker people for a while - and trying to run down a lead given to me by Dan - But have come up empty! When you get the info - put me in for 30 of those bad boys! Thanks, Jc

Gary, you can count me in for 32 knobs. Great job in locating them. Looks like we are well on the way to a 100. Don

Here's the latest on the knob news: It's taken me all week to get the customer service rep to give a price quote on the knobs, and a minimum order amount. Finally this morning when I checked in, she had just gotten a price quote, but only for the minimum amount (!!??!?!), which, as it suprisingly turns out, is a mere 40 knobs. The price each at this small quantity is $1.73. She was pretty sure that there were price breaks at the 100, 250 and 500 piece points, but had to get still another set of quotes (!!!) to find out what they were. I checked back this afternoon right before their closing time, but still no info. Hopefully I will have the final prices by Monday or Tuesday; honestly, It's like pulling teeth to get anything out of them. I'm guessing that the prices might drop down to the $1.50 range or lower, depending on how many we might need as a group, which would be very nice indeed. I'm probably going to want 50 or so to replace some of the ratty knobs on my Moog Modular synth and Minimoogs as well as my future Kustom Kollection. I finally caved in and bought a black K200B-1 from the local used gear place for a pretty good deal (it was badly in need of a good cleaning and more), and am going over it to get familiar with it. I'm getting some good ideas for doing a quality refubishing of the circuits, and will hopefully have some interesting things to share with you all in the near future. In the meantime,I'd like to hear from you about the things that you like and dislike about your amps, especially those of you with larger Kollections who can compare and contrast between several of the same heads, or between different models. What about some of the features? Having not had the chance yet to hear the units with Selectone, Selective Boost, Harmonic Clipper or Vibrato, I'd like to hear what you think about the sound of these, and the useful range that they cover; is it wide enough? Should it be wider (or narrower)? Does anybody use the Harmonic Clipper? Could its sound be improved? My first area of exploration is everyone's favorite, noise, and while I'm concentrating on ways to quiet things down, I'm also looking ahead to fine-tuning some of these features to make a more player-friendly stage rig. You can email me directly with your comments at gary@tranceaudio.com I'd love to hear what you think. I'll have more info for you next week (I hope!); have a great weekend and play loud! I just saw Jeff Beck rip it up in San Francisco on Wednesday night and have been both inspired and intimidated ever since. He gets an incredible palette of sounds with virtually no effects at all (just a very slight dash of echo here and there, less than I'd use even if I was being conservative). Truly awe inspiring. See him if he comes your way! gh

Gary: Hey, I'm glad you outdid me on finding knobs that are cheaper and don't require cleaning off the lettering! I'd rather get high on Kustoms than on acetone fumes! Please add 30 knobs to your order for me, and let me know when you need to be paid. Thanks! Deb Hart "Kustom Blues"

Good news on the knob front. I finally got the pricing and availability from the rep, and here it is: 40 @ $1.73 ea. (minimum purchase amount) 100 @ $1.44 ea. 250 @ $.91 ea. 500 @ $.71 ea. They currently have a hundred or so in stock; larger quantities have a 6 week lead time. I'm having a couple of samples sent to me to confirm that this is indeed what we're looking for, and will forward one to Kustom Dan for his perusal when they arrive. I'll keep everyone informed as this happens. The 250 piece price looks very attractive and seems attainable, although if we can get enough interest to reach the 500 piece price, great! gh

Gary, Great job. I look forward to seeing the sample. We can begin to get an order together (test the needs so to speak) while we wait for samples. Perhaps we can even pull it together along with the handle order and ship together for those that ordered both. I would be happy to receive them in bulk for the collectors that ordered handles, and to distribute them along with the handles if the timing works out. You should try to guage the cost of shipping the bulk to you (or me) and split that shipping over the volume to arrive at a price (for a price plus shipping cost to each of us). I will send you my handle e-mail that would serve as good starting point of those that may need knobs. I know I am in !

Gary, if it's not too late to get in on the knobs order, you can put me down for about 20. I'm still reading thru the past postings to catch up. Do you have pricing on handles yet, and are you guys going to put together a "group" order of those, too? Dave

Excellent timing, JC! I got some sample knobs and sent them to Kustom Dan a little while ago, and we have been corresponding about them. What I noticed, and Dan agreed with, is that these are very, very close, but not an exact match if you hold it side-by side with an original knob. Dan's mention of the Kurz-Kasch company as the supplier that Bud had mentioned got me digging around again, and what I found out is Kurz-Kasch sold their interest in producing these knobs to the Cosmo Corp sometime in the 70's. Talking with one of the old timers there, I found out that when Cosmo got the molds, they were in such bad shape that they had to be re-engineered for production, resulting in the model that is offered today. I'm guessing that these are the same knobs being offered as Rickenbacker replacements by Allparts. I have a few more samples that they sent me, and what I'd like to do is send them out to you JC, and maybe one to Deb, to compare with the Allparts knobs. Email me (gary@tranceaudio.com) with your mailing addresses, and I'll shoot them out to you, so you can comment to the group. Maybe Dan would like to post his findings here as well…. gh

I received a sample knob from Gary today. I compared it to some original 1976 Rickenbacker 3000 bass knobs (no lettering originally), and with new replacement 4003 bass knobs right from Rickenbacker (with lettering on them that is removed with acetone). Honestly, other than looking a little less worn--they are identical!!!!!!!!!!! And, the volume pricing is better than my sources from Rickenbacker. I am curious as to the Allparts one differ. But, overall, I'm sold!!! Count me in on that order Gary, I believe I ordered 20 or 30 before, so make sure I get them! We should all thank Gary for his fantastic effort here. Thanks Gary!!

If someone puts together a handle order, count me in. I just need 1 pair, but hey..... it's not much fun carrying a 2x15 with bare metal in one hand and broken plastic in the other! ;)

While reading the messages I came across your interest in Moogs.
I have the blank Moog set-up sheets. It is on white paper with a detailed picture of the moog controllers and you just mark all the positions for that set-up and then you have a copy to refer to from know on. My buddies take one and copy it several times for catolog their sounds. If you would like a copy I can send you one.I met Mr.Bob Moog a couple years ago while tuning a piano for a college seminar he was giving on the history of the Moog and on the Thermin. He is a very approacable and down to earth person

The smaller knob for the effects on 150-250 heads is Radio Shack part 274-415. Virtually identical to the original except it has an indicator line instead of a dot. No printing to remove, either. About $6.00 for a pack of four.

Am I right, that these knobs you are all talking about, are not fitting the Kustom Lead-III Amp (with silver panel, build 1977)?

This post is from years ago and 99% of everything on here is about the tuck and roll amps. You are correct that these are not for your amp.
