I need a little help. I have a 200B 1 head and it's smoking. Not, as in sounding good but as in, FIRE! The power resistor that goes between the ground on the input jack and the power on indicator light is over heating. Is the power resistor bad or could it be someone put a wrong sized bulb in?
A Warning: Power resistors that are malfunctioning do get very Very VERY HOT. If you ever have this problem, Do NOT touch!

The correct lamp is an 1829. That is a 28 volt lamp drawing 70 mA. Any lamp with a lower voltage and higher current will certainly cause the resistor to overheat. The most common lamp used for pilot lights is a 47. That is a 6.3 volt lamp at 150 mA. That is like a dead short to that resistor. Also, I believe the lower intensity, reddish color of the 1829 when operating is the main reason for the purple color of the pilot light. The red filament along with the BLUE lens will produce a purple color. Hot rodders have used that phenomenon for years. By placing a blue dot in the middle of a red taillight, the eye of a person following will see purple.

Sometimes these bulb sockets get real mucked up inside from repeated beers and soda showers, and then car wash style cleanings. Make sure the socket is OK.
