Hello. Nice cabinet, those are fairly hard to come by. First, I'd reccomend selling the original CTS speaker on ebay to help fund the project; those speakers in 18" sizes are extremely rare, so even one that needs a re-cone would be considered by someone. Secondly, there are a few brands of speakers to consider. Carvin, Madison, and Eminence sell 18" replacement speakers (there are probably more, but these are what I can think of right now). Eminence's Omega pro 18" is avaiable in 4 ohms and can take 800 watts. Steelsound.com sells a variety of 18" speakers by Madison from 400- 750 watt handling, but they are only available in 8 ohm I believe. Carvin sells some 18" made by Eminence (i think) that are also availiable in 4 ohms. Re-wiring the inside of a cabinet with a single speaker is a piece of cake. Just connect positive on the speaker to the tip on the 1/4" jack and negitive on the speaker to the sleeve on the jack. The gauge of wire to use is simply a matter of how much wattage you plan to use. Kustom cabs originally came with only 18 gauge in them, but the amps sold with the 18" folded horn were about 125 RMS, 250 peak, so that worked just fine. If you get a massive speaker in there and use a large amp (or not, I use 12 gauge speaker cables for everything practically), I'd wire the inside of the cabinet using 16 or 14 gauge, maybe even 12 if you are using an enormous amp. Good luck!
P.S.- after finishing this cabinet, your house may implode from the sound pressure level, so you might want to put on a helmet

If you look at the specs for a given speaker, they will have one headed Vas. This is the needed cab size in cubic ft that is needed for the speaker to meet it stated manufactures specs. with most speakers this size can be made smaller by 30% with out hindering the speaker to much, but it will not go down to its stated low end frequence.Altec VOTT cabs are a combo horn and vented style cab, and work great for medium throw apps.
