New to Kustoms (and speaker questions) [message #2187] Thu, 28 November 2002 22:59 Go to next message

Hi all - I will be buying one of the 410 cabs listed earlier by Kevin (charcoal t&r) unloaded. I am also attempting to purchase a matching head, 3-15-c1. I did some research here, and I believe the head is the K200 (or similar) in that it should put out approx. 100 watts and handle a 4 ohm load. (Correct me if I'm wrong!) Anyways - I'm working on figuring out how to load the cabinet. I'm a bassist and typically like an SWR or GK like sound, through a 410 cab. My concern is that this cabinet is not large enough to properly handle 410s either vented or closed. the id is approx 22.5" x 22.5" x 14.5"d. So I'm considering a 310 plus midrange/horn cab. I'm not worried about impedances or crossovers as I can figure those myself (through either series/parallel wiring or with some nice 32 ohm speakers). My main concern is designing the box such that I get the best response (not to mention the best value for my $$$!). So, towards these ends, any suggestions on speakers? Midrange/horns? I'm not sure I really even need a horn, but most of my previous cabs have had them. Finally, what sorts of wattages (for the speakers) have you all had the best luck with in a similar configuration? Would a 10" rms 100 watt x 3 be too much and be underpowered by the amp (keep in mind that I'll make sure the load is 4 ohms or above)? much obliged, eli

HI ELI i just finished redoing my kustom k100 bass head with 2x15 ported bass cab. i checked a few speaker brands out and although a few people prefer carvin or emminence i went with 2 WEBER CALIFORNIA 15 BASS SPEAKERS 16 OHMS, 80 watts ea, , 60 OZ MAGNETS , PAPER CONES WIRED IN PARALLEL. i just wired them up wednesday night and the sound is awesome.when i first got the amp off ebay it had 2 radioshacks and it was pretty loud at 5 with bass up and treble down. with the webers i get a tremendous bass sound at 2 on volume and the loudness as if it was on 5. i would check out their website WWW.WEBERVST.COM AND CALL AND SPEAK TO THEIR TECH. NICE PEOPLE AND FAST DELIVERY 1 WEEK TO MAKE THEM AND SHIP .AND THE PRICE WAS 95.00 EA.+SHIPPING.TOTAL 210.00 WELCOME TO THE SITE JOHN

Eli, I have three k200 and one KIII-L amp. One cab has 2 15" JBL d130f @ 16 ohms each for an 8 ohm load, one cab has one 15" Rola 4 ohm speaker (home made case), one cab with two 15" Carvin ps15 speakers for a 4 ohm load. You get more volume with a 4 ohm load, either 4 or 8 ohm load seems to work fine. I think you will be pleased with about any configuration you try. I think my JBL's are 200 watt speakers and the Carvin's are 400 watts. Not sure about the Rola. Seems like my K200B model pushes more power out than the K200A amp. (Maybe just imagination). These amps are really versatile. Gee, did I confuse ya! Good Luck and enjoy the world of Kustom. Thrill Bill

Thanks Bill! I'm pretty psyched about it too... I won the head on ebay though I'm not sure if it's a K200 or what. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it does. I may end up getting a sansamp or other preamp to round the sound a little bit. eli

from my research the best 10" for the price is the eminence legend. its a cast frame driver, large magnet, nice SPL level, and its range goes up to 9000 htz so it works for great slap bass and Yes type bass sounds.Any type of bass cab I have played thru with a horn has a huge gap in the fequency range unless the cab is biamped.A small cab like yours will be good for mids and highs. To play out you would probily still need a 15 or two, even more so if you play a 5 string axe. A kustom bass head puts out more clean power than a simlar guitar head because they both use the same power transformer and the guitar head has to power more semiconductors for the effects sections. In short the bass head has more reserve power.

Hey Steve, and thanks! Those are the speakers I was leaning towards anyways, the b102's. And I kind of figured I might have to reinforce lows with a 212 or 215. I may not though, I'll kind of have to wait and see what I think of the sound. Thanks also for your info about the head itself - I'm looking forward to using it. I may end up using a sansamp or some other preamp to warm the tone up a bit. eli

well, some good conversation on speakers. I have a k250 tuck n roll head and a 2 15 bottom, with the original kustom factory speakers, was thinking of replacing these speakers because of age with maybe jbl 15s, and also having the head ran through, because of when slapping at a louder vol i am getting distortion, and only on 2 is very loud anything above this is almost ... well any ideas? Thanks...

Hi! Sounds like you need to have the head checked for bad output transistors, and things like that. As far as speakers, I suggest the (yes, here it goes again) CARVIN PS 15 at $79 each. I have loaded a 250 cab with them and they are absolutely awesome, and another Kustom group member has also. they come with a 10 day inspection period. Give them a try, I think you'll be :-)

Ok, so I got the head and cab put together, and I've got to say it sounds AWESOME. I ended up loading the 410 with Peavey Scorpions and am very impressed. Though I think I'm going to need a separate 215 cab to handle more of the lows, maybe a crossover in between. Incredible vintage tone and super clean. I'm actually using a tube preamp pedal to help dirty up the sound and give some more natural sounding breakup when I dig in (we all know how terrible solid state overdrive sounds!) Anyway, much thanks to everyone here, when i get pics, I'll put one or two up so you all can see the cab; I made a grill with fender silverface grillcloth that looks incredible on the charcoal tr cab. eli

HI folks.that 4-10 cab is really on the small side. If you log onto the the parts express site, in the spec listing of what ever speaker you are looking at there is a spec called Vas, this is the cubic foot of internal cabinet volume that one speaker needs to operate with its stated specs/ or best sound and SPL level.
