HI GANG last night i started on my k100 rebuild. i took off the original black naugahyde tuck and roll that was on it . for those of you that like trivia there are 209 staples to remove from the head. i dont even want to take a guess on how many i will have to remove from my 2x15 cab.i am going to order the blue sparkle zodiac naugahyde tomorrow.i lucked out with the original foam strips and muslin backing. they are in really good shape after 30yrs so i can reuse them. i am taking pictures as i go so if anyone is interested in trying to do this themselves maybe the pics will help. i will start stiping the cab later on today .the hard part will be the amount of sewing thats involved and getting it right the first time hopefully. i am using the old material for a patern.when the sewing is done then i will re attatch the material to the wood shells of the head and cab the old way by spitting tacks with my trusty magnetized upholstery hammer instead of using staples.

Definitely pictures!!!! Also, if you can find it, Makita makes a 9.6 volt power stapler that uses standard 1/2" staples. It has been discontinued, but it is great. It has incredible power to drive lots of staples fast and deep. You may have to look at the Makita retail outlets or contact Makita directly.

there is a trick to NOT being in pain which i learned the hard way about 35 yrs ago when i was about 15 and was apprenticing with my father and i swallowed about 10 small tacks because some idiot slaped me hard on the back as a joke. my father ran out to the deli down the block and came back with a large loaf of italian bread and i had to eat the whole thing. it worked.
anyway , i finished stripping all the t&r leather off the cab and just have a bare wooden shell. i cant believe the craftmanship they had 30 years ago. seriously doubt they makem like that today. i ordered the blue sparkle yesterday and should have it by friday and then starts the fun. i will take as many pics as i can until its done and then anyone who wants the pics can email me and i can email them to you . there will be alot of pics.

here is an update on the tuck and roll project. i have all the original black t&r naugahyde off and a couple of days ago i cut the new blue sparkle using the old material as a pattern. the trick to cutting the pattern is to cut all the seams open on all of the pleats and stretch it out to get the real length. if you dont cut the seams open you will come up short on the new material when you sew the pleats.tonight i sewed 3 pleats and then the machine started jamming up. so tomorrow i will get a sewing machine repair guy in to go over the whole machine and set it up right. this machine is an industial singer 3115 thats about 70 yrs old.
and the saga continues.

sure, no problem deb.
when you take off the original tuck and roll covering it will come off in one long piece with all the pleats sewn to the foam and muslin backing ( the 2 sides and top ) on the bottom of the head there is just a plain piece of naugahyde stapled on with no pleats that just covers up the space between where the 2 sides come down.the next step is to lay uout the one long piece with all the pleats and very carefully cut all the seams open to detatch the naugahyde from the foam and muslin. after thats done you take the original naugahyde you just detatched and stretch it out as far as it will go to flatten out all the pleats. each pleat where it was sewn together is about a 1/2 inch wide which has to be added to the total length before you cut the material. if you dont do this you will end up short when you get to the last couple of pleats and you wont have enough material to cover and sew the rest of it. on my k100 head there were a total of 18 pleats with 19 seams. if each seam is 1/2 inch wide before it is sewn then you have to add around 10 extra inches to the total length of the new + 10 incnes extra to make up for all the seams giving a total of 52 inches in length. i just used the width of the roll which is 55 inches and just cut a strip about 19 inches wide right along the width of the roll. hope this helps. i have pics if you want them. just let me know and i will email em to you a few at a time because i took alot of pics as i went along.

Hi. I've done this job about 3 years ago with pretty good results. Made a red 2x10 combo out of a black one. Take you time and use staples. Paul

I have sent an email to Gary and he sent me a sample to match my cascade stuff. It's a perfect match. He also gave me a price for the material.

Deb,
You would need sun glasses just to look at it. Check out Gary's web site and the samples are on there.
