A lot of things can causing crackling. Is it on one or both channels? Have you tried another guitar cable? If it's just one one channel, it could be oxidation on the jack..try plugging and unplugging a guitar cord into it a bunch of times..you can use some de-oxit with it to clean it. If that doesn't help, then it could be bad resistors or capacitors can cause crackling. Using some freeze spray can probably track down any bad ones quickly, if you know what you're doing. If not, take it to a repair place..the tech should be able to trace it pretty quickly. Maybe Steve has some other ideas on crackling.

Oops, I forgot to mention, if it crackles when you adjust one of the controls, it could be a dirty or worn pot..cleaning the pot with some tuner spray could stop that. Just make sure the spray doesn't leak all over the circuit board..use some paper towels to catch the overspray.

It sounds like it has a componet that has broken loose from a circuit board. I have seen this in a lot of older amps. Lot of rough handling, and the heavy caps, can break loose. GE silicon glue was used to hold the big blue or orange caps to the boards, to solve the leads breaking free. Dirty controls usually quiet down once the control is set, but it never hurts to clean them. One way to help track down the noise is, the noise heard in all the channels, if so, then I would suspect the power amp section has the problem. If only one of the channels makes the noise, then I would look at that channel. Hope this helps, Don
