I bought a 2-12B cabinet off of eBay that is in really good condition. I want to drive it with a K200A-1 head. Imagine my chagrin when I hooked it all up, plugged in my Peavey 5 string Dyna-Bass and it sounded terrible. Pulled the back off the cabinet and found it was loaded with two different Carvin speakers.....of two totally different ratings...My Les Paul guitar sounded good thru them, but not the bass. What ares good, 12" replacement speakers for this cabinet? What ohm rating do they need to be, as I don't know the output rating of the K200A-1 head. It's not stamped anywhere on the back of the head.

Your amp is rated at 100 watts rms.....depending if you go with a 4 ohm load on the speakers. If you plan on only using this one cabinet and not adding an additional one, you will need to get (2) 8 ohms speakers wired in parallel to get your 4 ohm load. If you want to add another speaker cabinet in the future, then you need to get 16 ohm speakers so that your total combined load is 4 ohms. Going with 16 ohms for now will reduce the output of your amp to 8 ohms and the other guys here can tell you exactly how much power you will loose but you will have the option to add another cabinet in the future if you want.

As to what speakers you should get......buy the best you can afford. The guys here also have their personal preference. The Eminence Delta's are good bass speakers for the money. A nice set of vintage JBL's would also be a good selection but you will pay dearly for them.

The 212B cabinet came with CTS 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel from the factory. Does the Peavey Bass have active electronics? You may be overdriving the pre-amp with to much gain from the bass. Maybe back off the EQ on the bass and see how it sounds, since you like the sound with the Les Paul.

The Peavey bass does have active electronics....the pickups are pretty hot. The Carvin speakers that are in the cabinet now are not bass speakers. Pleat, you are probably right....over driving the pre-amp from the bass. I also own a 1972 K-250 with twin 15s, blue sparkle T & R that really comes alive with that Peavey bass. It is plenty loud.....but, it is also very loud with my 1967 Mosrite Combo bass which does not have active electronics.......It just has hot pick ups !!
Since the K200A head has output jacks for two cabinets, I am trying to decide to find another cab and set it up so that I could run twin cabinets with a total of 4 - 12s or, just be happy with a single cab, 2-12s. I have heard the Eminence Delta speakers and they do sound really good.

I always try and get a game plan or what do you want to accomplish with the equipment at hand. Iowa Boy is correct. The K200A heads are a 100 watt rms into a total of 4 ohms. Kustom mis matched their speaker cabients from the factory. The K200 head with one 2x15 speaker cabinet was sold as both guitar and bass amps depending on the brand of speaker you wanted to pay for. The cabinets used 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel for a 8 ohm load. Kustom did this on purpose, so if you added a second cabinet, the amp now produced maximum wattage.
It was Kustoms claim to fame that they were the first amp company to perfect solid state. Back then, musicians weren't so educated as to ohms vs. wattage. They just knew adding cabinets didn't burn out the heads.

So if you think you might add a second 2x12 cab at some point in time, you could install two 16 ohm speakers for a 8 ohm load. If you do find a second cab with two 16 ohm speakers for 8 ohm load, plugging in both cabs will get you the 4 ohm total load to the K200A head. This might be the way to go just in case the future second cabinet has the original 16 ohm speakers still in the cab.

What color is the 2x12 cab?

Pleat, the color is black. I just found another black 2-12 cabinet from a guitar amp for sale about 25 miles from here. Guy wants 175 for the cabinet. Plus, I need to buy a good 15" to put in my 147 Leslie cabinet I am rebuilding......Always an adventure....I can hear the wife now.....

Three 16 ohm drivers in parallel will get you a 5.3 ohm load which is plenty close enough to 4 ohms to end up with 95% of the amps full 100 wats rms of power!

Lets go one step further.....how about a 4-10 or 4-12 speaker cabinet. As long as its wired series/parallel, which I would imagine it would be in an 8 ohm application, that with the 2-12's would be a very nice set up to say the least.

Price wise, I have seen several 2-12's listed for $100 and the 4-12's or 10's for $200 on ebay and Guitar Center. Guess its your call as to how bad you want it or how motivated the seller is to part with the cabinet. The bargains are there if your willing to wait and watch.

Hiding equipment from the misses.......it will come back to bite you on the butt. Just go out and buy her something shinny and sparkling, and it doesn't have to be diamonds. Never met a woman yet who didn't respond to that one. You might even get lucky in the deal. Smile

Iowa Boy and Kustom_Bart......Love you two guys' ideas !! She won't make too big a squawk over the second cabinet, as she knows how much I love my amps and guitars. She knows I have been shopping for a Taylor acoustic and she is very aware of the $$$ price tag on one of those babies. LOL...she does get pretty much what she wants to buy, as well....so, all is well. Thanks to all of you for the excellent suggestions.

I picked up 3 early 90's Taylors two if them a 412 and a 410 both mint with electronics and cases for 400 for the pair and a 1990 835 12 string that had some finish problems where the idiot that I got it from tried to re clear it, I have it about back to perfect though it has electronics too. I got the one for 600. See if you can pick them up like that, then she can't get mad at you. LOL! The 400's have the pinless bridge on them.
