I'm the new guy [message #1003] Fri, 09 November 2001 13:52 Go to next message

Hi out there everybody, I'm new to this site (but have already posted a couple of times). I'm glad I found you all. This is a great site! I have a 1971 Kustom 200B-1 w/2x15. I like to take care of my things (especially musical gear). That is why my Kustom has the original covers, and I still have the original "Owner's Manual" and original sales receipt. Years ago, I sold all of my gear to pay for college, but I couldn't part with my Kustom. After 15 years, I started playing again and brought the amp out of storage. It fired up right away and seems to have gotten louder than I remember! Glad to be here, Country Gene P.S. What is a "Frankenstein" head?

OK - Sorry - Couldn't help myself - Very long day at work! The "Frankenstein" heads refer to the Kustoms predating the K200's. Slighly less watts, one less pleat across the top {11 vs 12 on the 200's} and a slightly higher top profile from the front. The Reverb pans where installed directly to the cabinet, and the extra room was needed above the amp section. When the later K200's where introduced, the reverb tanks where installed in the chassis of the amp, the plexi face got taller, and the tuck and roll was then approx. the same size top and bottom. Slighly different sounding rigs - I like them. The cabinets where "mostly" ported, but not with the thru round aluminum or chromed ports most recognizable on later model Kustoms. I can send a few pic's of the different types if you would like - Jc

ooo and i thought I was bad off the wall...hey..welcome to the greatest bunch of guys (and Deb)in the world...your story of returning to your first love is not uncommon around here...just glad you found your way to the gang...your 200 2x15 rig is something to be proud of and one of the hardest working rigs in the history of R&R....on your frank head expect to hear it also called a wide panel..the amps are the oldest kustom designs in production, they have really great tone, but tend to be less reliable by some reports and you may have trouble finding the older components for repair so make sure its a love thing rather than a regular player rig before you sink some funds into one...but the biggest warning is to not plug in unless your prepared to fall in love cause them old rigs sound phenom with pedals.... and I mean kick fender black face butt! You keep in touch... n Play Loud! ET

Thanks, everybody for the warm (and humorous) welcome!.. B.C..- You were asking about my Kustom............. It's a 1971 black 200B-1 Bass amp w/2X15cabinet. I still have the covers, original Owner's Manual, sales receipt, and the original boxes the amp was shipped in from the factory. I played it for 15 years with a variety of basses. Then life came along and I sold all my gear (except the Kustom). I recently started playing again (guitar). The Kustom sat in my parents house until this past May when I brought it to my house, plugged it in, and proceeded to wail! (Its a very loud amp, I rediscovered). I play guitar through it now with a Danelectro reverb mini-pedal and, if I play through the 'Normal' channel, I use a Danelectro 7-band EQ mini-pedal. The amp sounds great! (And did I mention - LOUD!?!) I replaced the original CTS speakers years ago with (2) Radio Shack 15" 100watt rms 8 ohm speakers, which sound pretty good actually. The only "problems" I'm having is the short-wave/radio interference - which I've seen a some others have had (on the "Bright" channel only), and a loud "whooshing" (not a hum & not a buzz) sound when any of the controls are turned up past the half-way mark. I was wondering if these "problems" were there before or if they just came along because the amp sat for so long (15 years)? Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with my Kustom and playing guitar again. Also, I'm really glad I found you all. I learned about this site from the "Fender Discussion Page". Someone over there referred to you folks as a "Very loyal group of Kustom fans").

Country Gene... Welcome also. You are lucky. You kept a Kustom amp when you went off to college. I, too, had Kustom stuff that I sold when I went to College...had to pay for the important stuff (pizza and beer). Now that I am back into Kustom stuff, there is only one difference...now it's called "vintage", it's harder to find, and probably costs more. Great hobby, eh? JO

Thanks for the additional information. I know ET still has his original Kustom from way back when with the cover...but the boxes and receipt......now that is dedication. I ...of course....had a Kustom way back in the dare I say it 70's....a cascade 200 2x15.....but it got away. So I have a few substitutes to keep me from getting lonely. I still need to get a very nice cascade 2x15 to get my old feeling back! BC!
