k100 head capacitor question [message #3135]

i was wondering what the effect would be on my amp if i replaced those to big can type capacitors with higher rated ones.any thoughts?

I have replaced mine with larger units. The voltage rating must be the same or higher. I have replaced my 2500uF caps with 10,000uF units at 50 volts with no problem. The headroom improves dramatically. If you watch the pilot light, it doesn't dim nearly as much. I would recommend the change. The only problem is you need to watch out for is the reverb pan as my new caps were MUCH taller than the old ones. I needed to drill new holes for the brackets and you may need to relocate the power wires to get extra length. Overall it's not a hard fix. Good luck, Conrad

well, i finished putting in the 2 10,000 micro farad caps and i am now very satisfied with my little k100 bass amp.i am finished fooling around. now i can just concentrate on playing my bass and enjoy it.if it wasnt for this website and the good people on it i would have never known about swapping out the caps. thanks to you all.

New type large mfd value caps are much smaller now-a -days. The 10,000 mfd ones I put in my k100 are a little larger than 1/2 the size of the orignals, I just glued them to the bottom of the amp with silicone glue.WARNING, larger caps will put a bigger load on the diode bridge at power up.I would replace them with a bridge made from 6amp 200 to 300 volt fast recovery style diodes for a more stable and better sounding amp.

hi steve i just looked at the schematic (k100 model 1) which you so nicely sent me .the only bridge rectifier i see is comng right off the transformer. its a round blue thing atatched to the chassis right near the 2 electrolytic caps i replaced. i am assuming there are 4 diodes inside this covering. do i replace the whole thing or do i take it apart and replace the individual diodes inside. or am i wrong all together? john

The effect would be tighter bass responce and more head room ,or volume before the amp goes into output distortion. This has no effect on letting the preamp take more input signal before it clips and distorts.
