Question: Checking voltages on Challenger [message #6434]

Hi, I'm repairing a friend's Kustom Challenger amp... other than the tremolo not working, the amp sounds fine. The trem circuit isn't optical, it looks like it uses an 8-pin N5558V op amp chip.

The schematic states, "Voltages are with power on, all controls full on, no signal, and no load". I've repaired a number of tube-type amps, but don't have much experience with solid state. Is it OK to have the speaker (load) disconnected when the circuit is energized?

I read the post that says don't do this on a circuit with only one output transistor, but the Challenger has two. Thanks for any advice on what to look for to fix the tremolo. Buddy

Yes its ok, unlike a tube amp that needs a load on the secondary to properly transfer a load onto the output tube plates hooked to the primary of the output transformer, a SS push pull amp like the kustom can not draw enough current thru its outputs to harm its self with no load.If you ever work on a SS amp with just one output transistor you need to have a load on that or youwill pop the output transistor.

Does this apply to a Kustom 200 for instance? I'm asking about Steven's responce. Do all vintage SS Kustoms have more than 1 output transistor?-kustomise

Hi, all kustoms are push pull outputs, So yes its OK to run them with no speaker load and cranked up to 10.
