I just bought a Kustom 150. As most of you know I have a few 200 amps and even one new Kustom 36 Coupe. But this is my first venture into the world of Kustom's 150/250 series. This is not a crying because I got and amp with one changed speaker thread. I knew when I bought that one was not orginal to this amp. I didn't tell the sellor but I wanna make into a bass amp anyway and as you've probably guessed its a lead amp.
I know from my 200 and 100 experience that the 200 heads like a 4 ohm load or a 8 ohm in the 100's place, and from my ohm meter that most Kustom cabs are 8 ohm though except for my 3x15 and 2x10/2x12 cab. So I was thinking that Kustom 150 amps probably like and 8 ohm load as well and probably have two 16 ohm speakers in them.
Well one in this cab is 16 ohm. Its the one on the bottom and its probably orginal since it has a chrome cap as well as the probable correct impedance. However the one on the top reads as a nominal 4 ohm on my meter. I know meters are not always completely accurate in giving impedance. But mine will usually get you in the neighborhood. I've checked it on plenty of cabs and wirings and it does give a pretty good idea as to what the impedance is for me.
The total load on this cab is only 4 ohms as well and its not wired internally the way most Kustom cabs are either. This speaker does look like the orginal in terms of magnet structure but thats about it. The only markings on this replacement speaker is A163. Anybody know what it is?
The amp works just fine. But I'm not planning on pushing it with its present load as that might be bad thing. So now the questions is a 150 cab supposed to be and 8 ohm cab like I think?
The next thing is that assuming the above to be true I am thinking about getting a pair of Emmience bass speakers in 12 inch, 16 ohms, 400 watts RMS, Delta -12B's for about 80 a piece. Will that be a good set for this 150?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts that you may have.

QModer,
What size caps are in the K150?
K100's are better for 8 ohms but can be used at 4 ohms if you change to 4,500MFD caps.
With 4,500MFD caps, the K150 should be fine at 4 ohms.

Minimum recommended output impedance
Model...Min. Output impedance...power supply filter caps
K100 ...8 ohms.....................2,500 MFD
K150 ...6-8 ohms................... ??
K200 ...4 ohms.....................4,500 MFD
K250 ...3-4 ohms...................4,500 MFD?

Personally, my favorite 12 inch bass speaker is the Eminence BassLite.
I have them in three bass cabinets (1x12, 2x12, 2x10).
(For more info, search this site for Basslite)

specs on a few good bass speakers:
Madison Knight12 .......Basslite S2012....DeltaLite II 2512
FS 50 hz ....................FS 48 Hz.........37 Hz
X max 6.35mm 0.25in ...5.2mm ...........4.9 mm
97 dB ......................97 dB .................99.9
300w........................150w .................250w
10.23 lbs....................4.1 lbs ............ 5.1 lbs

Thank you very much for your reply Les. You really know a lot about these little amps and cabs. What caps do the 150's usually run then? I have no plans do any of that kind of work on it. If it can handle 4 ohms in stock condition that would open up the field more as there are a lot more eight ohm speakers available than 4 ohm or 16 ohm. It would be cool to have two of them together some time too though.
That way I have a Behringer 450 watt head that I use some time with my double cab Cascade 200 set and I could use it with a couple of 150 cabs if I can another one. I will definitly check on the basslite speakers and the prices for them. It looks like my back would thank me and you.
