just won a couple nice lil treasures..some kustom you don't often see..the pair of PA horns in black cabs...only they weren't a pair..they were 2 seperate auctions..so I knew going in I was setting myself up for some abuse..and it was also tipped off by the seller (a savy power seller) starting a no reserve at $9...(hint: translation - I have a co-conspiritor who will run this price to the price I want at the last possible snipe moment..) why not just use the freakin reserve!!..ok..but still.. I bit the hook...and a real bidder did take a shot at me on one auction...from $9 to $75..fair enough..but realizing I was maxed higher..he let it lay...however ol dyzguy shows up at the last..and he pegs me for a $100..no problem.. I'm out of town so I had set a max on the rigs...so I still have it...but that wasn't good nuff for dyz..he has to go to the other auction and peg it up to a $100 too...thanks...anyway.. I'll spend a little time researching both handles just on principle (principal?...cause it pissed me off)..but in reality...the seller coulda popped me for $150 each and I'd still have won..so I hope somebody pertinent is reading this vent...cause I want them to know that 1) if I can catch you... I will report you... 2) you still didn't get but half of what I was prepared to pay for em...
there..now back to our regularly scheduled nice Ed....

You know Ed, I never thought about a ringer on those auctions, but if the ringer won, just list them again. Oh, I get it!!!. He drives it up to the max. I'm a little slow sometimes. (All the time) That would p*ss me off too. I like Ebay but it has the possibilites of abuse. By the way, why is Dan Olenik using Ebay before giving us a first chance? As long as you're b*tching.

That's why I always snipe. Reduces the chances of such things happening.

If you suspect shill bidding (seller bidding on his own auctions using another ID), report him to eBay. It may work, it may not. I've succesfully gotten sellers kicked off eBay for shilling, so it does work (just not always).

As to why Dan (or anyone) chooses eBay rather than a list like this : I've sold some smaller items to friends on my combo organ discussion group, but for more expensive items, I'm not keen on putting them up for grabs on the group. No telling who you might wind up doing business with. At least with eBay/PayPal the seller has *some* protection against deadbeats. But for any of the regulars I've come to know and trust, if I think they're looking for a specific piece, I'll usually offer it to them first.

I've always found Dan to be thoughtful about certain pieces of gear..if he knows a kollector..he'll usually contact them specifically..more of a friend to friend thing...beyond that..ebay seems to be the even ground..that way the fight is in that sand box...
i don't ever sell my kustom stuff..but if I did.. I'd do the same as I do with my guitars and guns.. I'd go to my regular forums and let it be known..give em a couple days to respond...and if no takers then off to ebay/gunbroker...etc...the hard part is in the approach...do you just say.."hey..I've got this cool lil kustom...somebody make me an offer..." then you get lower offers than you want..and feel guilty not working with someone...or you set your price and guys wonder why you aren't offering up a good deal to the gang....its just a tough call...so I don't fault anyone for a decision either way...the only consideration I give is to hold back on bidding if I know the other guy, like him and know the kustom will get a good home..in that case I guess I'm being unfair to the seller cause I won't compete..even if I'm likely to pay more for a piece...
as for me and my ebay abuse.. I'm sucking it up...I wanted the pieces.. I was in a travel situation that meant I could not be online when the auction was wrapping up..so snipe possible allowed..guess I coulda asked a bud to bid it for me..but there was not that much money involved..so I figure...lay a max out there that I could live with and hope I didn't get screwed.. I did get tagged a bit...and its either a collaboration..or just a sore bidder who didnt like loosing..figured he'd just stick me...or perhaps..in honesty...the bidder might have expected me to play dirty and only bid high on the first one..then bid really low on the second and hope to get away with it...still...easy enough test those waters without running it up the way he did...oh well..enough whinin...I was set to pay every bit of $300 for them...so got off for $200...I'll live thru it...program complete...exit when ready...

No, there is no problem. Really. It's just that I would rather get a piece for a slightly lower price than what can happen on Ebay. I am just being frugal at someone else's expense. Dan has every right to do with his collection as he choses. But I tend to be like Ed. I collect without intention of selling. I am not in the music store business, so I tend to look at a sale as parting with an old friend. If I decided to sell my collection, I would want all of my Naugas to go to good homes rather than some snot nosed punk kid who thinks the T&R would look better pierced. However, that being said, any time we can increase the presence of the grand old glitter (in some cases, black) in the public eye, that is a good thing. So I am conflicted. Remember, this started as an Ebay vent.

in some cases...black?!!! in SOME cases?!!?? (grin) ok.. I admit it.. I deserve every black hit I catch cause part of the reason I have many of them is that they went cheaper than the sparkles...so I was able to win the auctions...but really.. I do totally dig the black stuff..even though I'm embarrased to say that its all out in my warehouse right now..and the only rigs that are up here in my wee lil office space are some sparklers...I need to go out and at least pull in my original 1x12 black rig..it deserves a place of high esteem...and frankly..it deserves to be played more..cause it still sounds great....
in all my years, I've sold one kustom..it was a white frank head dead mint clean...and I sold it cause I figured I'd never find a cab to match in the same 10 condition.. I still regret selling that head...I guess someday is coming when I'll either be fortunate enough to have a grandkid or something that wants all these toys..and I'll just hand them over...else.. I'll hope to find somebody with a few dollars to chunk on the whole collection.. I really do believe that a complete model line in black is important to the history of these amps...yes, I am missing a couple things...the 1x15 K100 cab, and the 4x12 PA columns...but in general..for that 68ish era plexi models... I have a solid representation of what kustom offered...so folks can see them, hear how they are different..etc...I'd hate to break it up...but who knows what another 20 years will bring.. I'm only ......almost.....50 yrs old...so hope to have an excuse to continue to hold the kollection for a bit yet..but one of these days.. I'm liable to sell this 12 acres and house of mine..buy a boat..and whatever doesn't fit in 42ft of fiberglass will just have to be someone elses treasure.....course if I stack em carefully..and sleep on the 3x15s...hmmm...this could be doable...

In that regard, I am lucky. I have 2 sons that play and one is a bass player and one is a guitar player. They will get the collection when I can no longer play them. As it is, the amps get around. They were out last weekend and Saturday they will appear in the middle of town for a fall fest. Then they will show up again just before Halloween for another public function. But I still want to play and The entire stage is Kustom. It is fun. But my K100 Kollection needs 3 colors yet, Red, Silver and finally, and I'm saving the best for last, BLACK!!!!

Conrad, so you have a k100 combo in gold!I think that is one of the hardest original ones to come by.

Yes, Actually I got it on Ebay. What a coincidence. It is a K100-1 with a 1x15 CTS bass rig. I think the CTS is lacking in range though. I like my 2x12 CTS better. I might find a JBL D140 for it but it has a low priority. There are some spots in the covering that looked like rust spots from metal flakes that rusted and stained the surface, but I can't get them out. Overall it looks pretty good. I would insert a picture here but I don't know how. Most of my collection is very pristine.

If you are talking about a lack of highs on the speaker, I have a cts 15 that sounds that way a bit also compaired to my other CTS 15s. I think there was a change in the cones at some point, and the darker sounding ones have a heavy non- ribbed cone.

I haven't opened the cabinet. It might not be a CTS for all I know. It is lacking in highs and really has very little personality. Because the gold is quite striking, PC for gaudy, it doesn't get out much. If I put in a D140 it might get used more.

I've not done it recently..but for many years now...my stage has included the 3x15siren cabs for PA main, 2x15 bass cabs per side for low..and 4x10 columns on occasion for side fill or vocal range augmentation...on top of the 3x15 sirens I add the casings for the 200 heads but I have them loaded with PV 22T horns.
then I run a pair of black SC combos for my guitar...so plenty of matching tuck n roll on stage.
my ultimate sideman rig..which has yet to actually be used...cause I only recently got the second piece...is a pair of 4x10SC in blue...but most of my sideman jobs find me just running a pair of 2x10 or 2x12 SC rigs...and a really good day puts my 64 fender show through my kustom 4x12 ported cab with the twin 2x12SC on either side.. I run a morely ABY pedal to kick things in as I want them...
I believe BC runs a complete wall of kustoms..bug 3x15 and 3x12 cabs behind his entire band..all colors...impressive!

This weekend I will be setting up a PA for a local Fall Fest. I will have 2 3X15 siren Cascade columns with JBL E140's, 2 Red 3X15 Jensen Ross Sirens and 2 4X12 JBL E120 loaded columns for the mids. The Cascade sirens are split and run as subs and highs with the mids in the 12's. I am powering the JBL subs with 1700 watts from 1/2 of a QSC PLX 3402, the mids are the second half of the 3402 running at 1100 watts and the highs are driven by a Sunn SA21 running at about 300 watts for the pair. The Reds are being pushed by a QSC PLX 1602 running about 500 watts running full range. Mostly, the Reds are for show right now. I need to aquire 3 more E140's and split the cabinet the same as the Cascades. Right now I don't need that kind of firepower. But I would like more lows and I would push 3400 watts out of 8 JBL's. Then I would like to run a second QSC PLX 1602 for the mids. But I'm sure that wouldn't be the end. I know there is a way to add pictures to this post but no one has explained how. Help!

Some of the new guys have been adding pictures to these threads but I've tried and failed. There must be a way.

I think you have to have the image hosted somewhere already. When you reply, there's a "Formatting Tools" toolbar, and one of them is "Image Insert". Click on that, and you can enter the URL of a picture. Here's an example - it's one of the pictures from my website (I hope this works):

Thanks, Ed. That is (or was) Jimm Bennett's Kombo, and is one of the best pics I have. See the whole Kombo Kaleidescope here:
