Time for a new (old) Kustom [message #2398] Sat, 25 January 2003 10:32 Go to next message

I've got the bug to get another Kustom. I sold my last one about 15 years ago and I miss my little padded friends. I've added an entry to the classifieds, but I would appreciate any tips that any of you may have. I'm primarily a bass player and I am looking for a companion to my mid 60's Gibson EB-2D bass. I want a K-100 in Cascade, Blue, or Charcoal, with my first choice being the single 15 with the bass head (no fx), but I would take a double 12 and a guitar head. It's O.K. if it doesn't function, but must be in good cosmetic and mechanical condition. John Forster p.s. Very cool site, but imagine my suprise to see a certain c4ster (AKA Conrad) lurking around the postings. He's not to be trusted and any resemblance between us is strictly genetic. p.p.s Hi big brother!

Welcome John. Kustoms are addictive. My desire for them has brought me 20+ in the last 4 years....and you know how far Conrad went to get his siren cabinets! I like the 100 bass rig for small venues. I use 200s with 2x15 most of the time inside...and I used 250s outside last summer. You see...you have to have a size for every room and a color for every mood. Now, if I could just find a red or gold 400...............BC

BC, My main gig right now is in a bluegrass band. These guys can barely handle an electric bass, just wait till they see a sparkling green or blue tuck and roll beauty on stage! I may be thrown out of all of the good bluegrass venues... or is that an oxymoron?

John A K100 bass amp on Ebay ended recently without selling, so it will probably get re-listed. It is blue with a single 15". To see it go on Ebay and search for completed "Kustom 100 bass amplifier" auction. It seems to be in very good condition overall; knobs and speaker are not original and casters are missing. You can get the sellers email from the ad or you can email me and I can give it to you. Les Strickland LStrick115@aol.com

Well..welcome to the best bunch krazies on the planet!! Wanted to encourage you to also consider the lesser seen SC series (combos)...they made a single 15 self contained...came in 100 and later 150 plexi face models...they are large and make a good stage precence visually..yet sit low in the backline...very acceptable on the country and bluegrass stages today...and with the Altec load..they are absolutely unbeatable tonewise...I don't know, but i'd really bet that the air space in that rig was actually designed, rather than what I see in the single 15 K100 series which to me looks like they tried to fit into the 2x12 box...anyway you go...the koolness factor is just fantastic...glad to see youcoming back around to some tuck n roll....Play Loud! Hey John....Bluegrass is fine....I live in the Bluegrass State.....but I have never played or smoked any. Truly there is good and bad in all styles of music. I never much cared for BG until I heard a band called the Newgrass Revival...and they used ELECTRIC BASS when I saw them. Great sound! I think a little sparkle is just what is needed to stir things up a bit! Another good thing about the SC combo series 100 or 150 bass amp is that it makes a darn good seat when one is needed! The down side is that it is a little tough to move because of its bulk if there are stairs involved.....but the tone...especially with and Altec like Dan had....is very nice! The Kustom "Charger" amp in the SS series is a later version of the same design.Check them out in the literature section! BC

Sure, my dopey brother is now communicating with me in an open forum leading everyone to believe that we are not on speaking terms. :-) Actually, John had a charcoal 2x15 that he made a new baffle board with 1x15. He used the pictures from the catalog to get the appropriate look and it worked rather well. If I remember, he had a JBL E145 in there. He kept the 2x12 baffle and speakers, and returned them to the cabinet when he sold it. I think my son would like a 1x15 also. Hey it's the cash thing, you know. Conrad P.S. HEY JOHN!!!! You can call you know!!!!!

If memory serves, it was a K145. The K145 was a heavy duty 140, if you can imagine that. I did love that that rig, and I still have episodes of remorse. Les, I'm chasing that K-100 from e-bay, so we'll see. Thanks for the tip! As for my other comments, they we're offered with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. Although I am a rocker at heart, I'm having a ball playing the bluegrass with a great group of guys. And of course I can thank my big brother for my obsession with both Kustom and Gibson. And now he is starting with the next generation. Too Cool. As the saying goes.... Play Loud. John

I love the whole family thing...in fact you newbies probably don't know it but BC and I are twins!..well...we think it was an early test tube experiment and we were seperated at birth, but thanks to Kustom, we found each other!!! BC got all the good looks and the stud muffin (according to his wife..something about Greek God!!)..but I call him the Thunder God cause he lays down the bass through all the tuck n roll..me, I got the treble clef end of the deal..and I'm figuring my grey hair was a product of my environment (my daughter!)..other than that..we are exactly alike..nuttin like Kustoms to bring a family together...

I have reproduction knobs if you need them, and the reproduction casters as well. If you get one and need some, let me know. Deb

ya know..some things a wife just never lets die...specially if there's a tad of humility in it for her beloved husband... I used to dred it when folks would say to me.." you know who you look like?...that Pretty Woman guy....etc..."...now when it comes up I just cringe..cause she's gonna go to that one story every single time!..and for the record for the rest of ya'll.. I'm younger than Gere...he's just not got my mileage! I may be charcoal zodiac on top, and my casters are a bit worn...but on a clear summer night when the stage lights come up..there's still a full 100watts rms under the hood..mind you... I'll be wiped for at least a week thereafter...this rock n roll stuff is definitely a young man's battle..thank God they are still using Kustoms to wage it! ya'll Play Loud! ET
