Missing Voltage Selector [message #3882] Thu, 18 March 2004 07:23 Go to next message

I recently purchased a Kustom 200 amp from the US (I live in England). I believe there is usually a voltage selector on the back of these amps but mine just has an empty space where i think one used to be. I can easily buy another switch but where would I solder the wires to on the amp?? Would it be easier to just buy one of those all-in-one USA to UK voltage/plug convertors?

Hi. Kustom amps where never made with optional windings on the power transformers like some older tube amps. As long as the line voltage is not above 125 volts A/C you will be ok, the problem is that the 50 cycles you have over there will not let the amp run at its best. And that you can not change. If you,ve got more than 125 volts get a converter or a variac so you have 117 volts or so.

These power converters you mention all seem to run appliances up to a certain wattage, which would you recommend? I have no idea when it comes to these things (can you tell!?) Am I right to assume that this is different to the output wattage of my amp?

Hello. yes the output wattage ratting of a amp has nothing to do with a label on a amp that says how much wattage the amps power supply uses.Using Ohms law, a 200 watt output rated amp run on 120 volts and drawing 3 amps would consume 360 watts from the wall outlet, a 100 watt RMS amp would use half that wattage at 3 amps. I forgot what kustom you said you have but K200s have a 3 amp fuse in them so at full RMS output they need 180 watts.
