Pleat - Follow up for "One 4 Ohm or Two 8 Ohm Load.. [message #896] |

Hi Pleat, thank you for the info on my question about the specification "Use One 4 Ohm Load - or Two 8 ohm Loads".
just to clarify about the subject..
- if you do have two "8 Ohm speaker cabinets", then do you mean.. you shouldnt plug just one 8 Ohm load cabinet into the speaker jack on its own - and that both cabinets should be plugged in at the same time according to the "Use One 4 Ohm Load or Two 8 Ohm Load" specification written on the back of the Kustum Kasino Concert PA amp.
Thanks again.. appreciate it..

In case pleat doesn't respond to you, I will try to help: Plug 2 eight ohm cabinets in at the same time, and you will have the recommended 4 ohm load. If you do not have 2 eight ohm cabs, and you have a single 4 ohm cab, then that one is fine. If all you have is 1 eight ohm cab, that will be fine, you will just have a little less output wattage. You do not want to plug 2 four ohm cabs in together because that would be a 2 ohm load and that would hurt the amp. Use the speaker output jacks and not the monitor output jack. To educate you a little further:
Two 8 ohms speakers plugged into the amp together= 4 ohm load.
Two 4 ohm speakers"""""""=2 ohm load. This is true because a parallel connection means that you take the ohm value of one cab and divide it by the total amount of cabs.
A series connection is totally different. In series two 8 ohm cabs would be 16 ohms. Two 4 ohm cabs=8 ohms.
I know how to make a box that will allow you to hook up 2 cabs in series OUTSIDE the head at will. This is a good thing to have in your musician's box of goodies. If you need the instructions, ask for it.

Deb, put very nicely. The amp runs best at the 4 ohm load, and with the two speaker jacks on the back of the amp are wired in parallel. If the amp produces 100 watts of power at 4 ohms, it will produce about 65 watts with one 8 ohm load. This giving that the THD is to remain the same. THD is total harmonic distortion and will be measured in a percentage. This is getting deeper than most people want to delve into, but there is some good reading in the amp repair section of this site. I think we all are assuming that you have the matching cabinets that came with your pa head. If you are trying to connect different cabinets to the kasino head, I think we need to know what the cabinets are.

Thank you guys very much.. helpful and well written information.
Speaker cabinets I would like to use for PA use:
(2) Kustom C12N 2-12 Jensen special design speaker cabinets.
From what I have learned from you guys.. these cabinets were basically designed for guitar and rated at 8 ohms per cabinet.
From the few times I have tried these cabinets, I thought the sound was pretty good (for vocals). Any opinions would be welcome again..
Thanks to you both for all the great help on this.
