Ive went through most of the older posts seeing if any previous posts could help me out and Im still lost. Ive recently come upon a black on black Kustom 200B head along with the dual ported altec 2x15 cabinet. Lately Ive been playing an Epiphone EBM bass with active pickups, and It wasnt until I hauled this beast to practice that I noticed the problem. When cranked up to higher volumes the sound becomes very distorted and lacks any power at all. The symtoms of another post on this bbs. I also read about active bass' problems with earlier Kustoms, but Ive tweaked my knobs on my bass everyway possible. Could it be the bass itself? When at a lower volume the sound is creamy and warm, but once I crank it, it sounds like suck. Umm, do I need to replace the speakers, or the bass? I want to say bass cause, I think that my Kustom is the most metal looking amp ever made, I love the plexi faces! But any way does any body have any suggestions? or Maybe I should ask someone to let me plug their bass to my amp?

Hi, there are a lot of things to look at to isolate the problem. Try a non active bass guitar, try the cabinet with another head, make sure the speakers are wired correctly and are not on the verge of the cone being froze. You may have one bad speaker causing the amp to be driven harder. It's hard to tell after 30 years just what might be inside the cabinet speaker wise. You might even find some lost toys or french fries in the cabinet. I have found many items inside kustom cabinets from toys to beer bottles to ink pens. If there is a object inside, it may be resting against the speaker cone and speaker basket. Try the kustom amp with another cabinet. One of these should help isolate your problem. One last thing with the active epiphone bass, is the battery good? Some electronics will start to get distorted before the battery goes dead. I hope this might help you out. Keep us posted on what you find out. Don

I opened the cabinet, and when I pushed down on the speaker the whole cone moved even down in the spider, and made a rubbing noise. This happened on both speakers, is this a call for new speakers? Then what kind?

Hey Stoner, buy some Carvin PS15 speakers from www.carvin.com. I LOVE them for bass! They will handle 400 watts. they are 8 ohm speakers. Wire them in parallel for a 4 ohm load and you will have some serious tone! I have them in a 250 style 2-15 cab and I thump the hell out of them with a Kustom 250-1 head. They don't even fart! They will rattle stuff off the walls! And, the price can't be beat! Let me know what you think. Deb aka KustomBlues, aka the Low Frequency Goddess :-)

I was wondering, what about peavy black widows? I play in a hardcore band, and we hit the road next month, and I would love to haul this bad boy with me, so what does everyone think is the most dominating 15"? Ive used different amps and cabs, but you cant buy raw Hartke speakers... sadly. But If everyone suggests carvin I'll give em a try, but I was just wondering about everyones personal preferences.

Stoner, I used to swear by Peavey black widows.....until I bought the Carvins!!! The Carvins sound much better! BW's tend to flap and fart a lot, and they sound too midrangy and mushy in comparison to the carvins. The carvins are a deal at $79.99 + 7.99 shipping. You will pay about $120 each for a BW new.....
