Hello all; I picked up a K200B(Serial# 37685) head and 2x15 cab in a pawnshop for $100 thats been sitting in my basement non-functional for many years until two weeks ago when I had the head repaired to factory specs and now it works great. Only problem is, the 2x15 cabinet with (presumably) the original speakers in doesn't sound too good-- sounds distorted like the speakers are blown. I've done some modest research as to replace them, but I can't seem to put all the info together to make a good decision about what to buy and so forth. Different local guitar stores are telling me 1) Put Black Widows in it and you'll be happy because it's a high-efficiency speaker despite its monster power rating 2)Put 50 watt Eminence or Jensens in it and you'll be happy because you won't be burning up the voice coils to achieve decent volume levels 3) "Let me take a look at it and I'll do what I think is best" Clearly, the latter is not my choice on an amp that I want to be restored to its tucked and rolled awesomeness as faithfully as possible. I'm no moron, I can put new speakers in something without a problem, but I can't seem to find a reliable source to indicate which ones to put in. I know I can recone the ones that are in there, but something doesn't jive to me about reconing potentially >30 year old speakers and using the cabinet as a respectable bass rig. The cabinet also says CTS directly above the jack-hole on the jackplate, but I can't find a serial# anywhere on it. As to other biases that I have on this project, I am probably leaning toward putting brand new speakers into it versus buying vintage(used) ones and also leaning toward the lower watt alternatives because they're comparatively much cheaper. The speakers I've narrowed my search down to are Jensen P15N's or C15N's (but are these only guitar speakers?, I'm using it for bass), Carvin PS15 (mostly because they're talked about all over this site), Eminence Alpha 15 (too high power rating?), and then finally the Black Widow variety (waaaay too high power rating???) Finally, what ohms do I wan't? Seems that many on this site say the amp prefers 4 ohms, so two 8ohms? (Probably no chance that I'll be getting another cabinet anytime soon as I've never seen another in my city anywhere) Well, that's enough questions for now, hope I've given all the necessary background information. Yes, those square magnets are eitheir CTS or Jensen speakers. The CTS manufacture code stamped on the magnet is 137, jensens would be 220. But since you said the jack tag was CTS stamped then thats what you have.I do not know the what the SPL ratting was for those CTSs, but in direct listening test I have done with a/b ing them with my altecs and JBLs, I would have to say they are around 6 DB less.But their tone is quite good. Their half the reson why the Amppeg portaflex bass amps where the mainstay of every recording studio in the 60s and early 70s, and are so prized and valued today.
