Someone has a gold "Kustom by Ross" head for sale. He said it only says "Kustom by Ross" on the front and no other model name etc. I don't think he knows if it solid state or tube...anybody have any ideas?

If it says Kustom by Ross, without any other front panel markings, I'd guess that it is a A-series head. Have the owner check the serial number plate on the back for the model number.
All Kustom amps made before the recent versions were solid state.
Also it may not be gold, but silver that has yellowed with age.

The only tube Kustoms that I've ever heard about are either the current models or the earlier Chinese made ones that preceded them. I wouldn't call them vintage.
From what I can tell, the A-series heads are very similar to the later B-Series, but were redesigned to be manufactured a bit better.
If you search the forum there will be a few threads that discuss some of the differences. John Fogerty of CCR used A-series heads, so if you listen to any CCR stuff from the late sixties that will describe the sound.
And yes, Kustoms do have an amazingly warm tone for solid state amps. Not really tubelike, but rounder than a lot of recent solid state amps.

Their are no vintage(1960s to early 70s) Kustoms that are tube. You must be mistaking The late 90s tuck & roll covered TRT models, like my TRT 100, or its visually identicle smaller brother TRT 50 (50 watter) for a vintage Kustom.
These! models where all tube but for the reverb send and recovery circuit, and will never be vintage but will be antiques in another 15 years or so!
