Hi all,

I would like to get some of your input on 15 inch speakers.I am
thinking about replacing the 15 inch speaker in my gallien-krueger bass cabinet with a vintage one but cant decide on what.
Do I use a altec 421 or a altec 515b or a jbl d 130 or 140. Then there are jensen and kustom too. I know it will increase the weight but it will stay in the studio so I dont care. What do you all think?

Thanks,
Mark

The first thing to know would be the impeadance of the driver you are replacing. Most are 8 ohms, but some have custom wound 4 ohm voice coils so that the amp will output its full wattage.
If you want a vintage one and only play a 4 string bass my vote is for the Altec 421 and goes up pretty high in frequency and as such is good for slap bass style also. You will probibly get a reply here from a person recomemding the JBL D140 which is also a good driver which is strong up to 3000 hz, where the altec will hit 5000hz.
If you play 5 string bass and or need a 4 ohm driver I would go with the Eminence kappa 15 model(parts express part number 290-459) this is a 450 watt driver where as the other two are only good for 150 at best, but in a studio that sould not be much of a concern.
The EMinence driver only goes to 2500hz, but if your cabinet has a horn then your golden!
The Kappa is also made in a 8 ohm model, or if you only play a 4 string and need a 8 ohm driver than the Delta model(part number 290-418) is a great choise and a little less money than the Kappa serise.
These are all great drivers, but if you want that vintage 60s ampeg B15 tone, than the jbl or kappa driver would be the way to go.

Hey Stevem thanks for the info, the speaker I am replacing
is 8 ohm and I am four string player. I mainly play blues
and love the bottom end. I think ill try the altec 421
and see what it sounds like.
