Hi,
I goofed, I took the back panel off of my K50-2 sc to clean some dust out and reattach some of the insulation that was coming loose.
I unplugged the 1/4" phono plug and the 2 wires that go to the speaker without marking which side of the speakers they attached to. It is a single 12" Jensen C12N, there is a single yellow paint dot on one side.
I am ASSUMING that the center of the 1/4" phono plug is(+)?? is the yellow dot(+)??? also, I don't want to connect it out of phase and damage the speaker.
Is there a way to test the speaker to check which is positive?

Thanks.

With a one-speaker amp, it really doesn't matter which way you connect it. Speaker phase is really only an issue in multi-speaker cabinets, where connecting the speakers out of phase with each other can have disastrous sonic results. It most certainly won't damage your speaker or amp to hook it either way.

The only difference is whether the cone moves inward or outward on any given part of a wave cycle. I've heard that different manufacturers aren't even in agreement about which way it should go - so that it's possible to connect two speakers from different manufacturers, apparently in-phase (judging by the red/black or +/- markings) and actually have them out of phase.

Having said all that, I think most folks just connect the "tip" of the phone plug to the red or + marked terminal, just out of a sense that that's the way it "ought" to be.

Rodak is right, in a single speaker application phase really doesn't matter, unless you play with two matching amps for stereo.

That being said, to find out which terminal is positive, take a small battery (9 volts or less) and touch it to the speaker terminals and watch the speaker cone, it will either move out or in from the metal basket.

If it moves outward, the terminal that the positive battery terminal was touching is the positive speaker terminal. If it moves inward, the terminal that the negative side of the battery was touching is the positive speaker terminal.

Do not hold the battery on the speaker terminals any longer than needed, as this could cause damage.

JBL speakers move inward with a positive voltage applied to the red terminal. Every other brand I have delt with (Peavey Black Widow, Jensen's, EVM's, CTS, and Altec's) move outward with positive voltage to the + markings.
