I've got a '71 Hustler I'm thinking of selling. I'm curious to know about the speakers. They have the Kustom stamp on them. Are those Kustom-made and are those any better/worse than the other manufacturers?

Need to know what the info is from them, info from the magnets and part numbers from the frames to know what brand they are. The white paint Kustom stamp just lets you know that they are original Kustom amp speakers. It doesn't mean anything else.

4 sets of numbers

5810095
137 7213
8 ohms
038-0010-00

I think they were installed in April 72 but that's all I get from that mess.

thanks!

The 137 number is what you need and the 137 means they are CTS speakers. Not when they were installed but when they were made is the rest of the number 72 the year 1st month 3rd week maybe. I forget about the 13 part. That is my best guess...lol!

CTS speakers are good speakers, but it isn't like they are Altec's or JBL's CTS stands for Chicago Telephone Supply and they make CTS pots for guitars etc.

The CTS made guitar drivers of that era where used to replace Jensen made drivers, which Kustom had used from the start.
Jensen manufacturing was also out of the mid west area like CTS and at the point in time when your Husler was made/born, Jensen was already sold once and in the process of going out of bussiness.
The last stab they took at getting back some matket share was to instute a line of speakers with a life time warranty.
The CTS guitar drivers sounded much like the highly regarded Jensens they replaced.
The CTS drivers though had larger magnets and as such had tighter bass responce.
To my ear the CTS drivers have a bit more middle to their voice than say a Jensen C12N model driver which was Kustoms base line 12 inch driver before the change over.
Looking back now its ironic that part of the reason Jensen took a dive was the fact that dispite many request of comapnys that used their drivers to make them handle higher power thay never did this change due to the fact that implementing such changes would alter the sound and responce of there drivers.
Now, 30 plus years latter speaker companys like Weber make a ton of money each year by selling drivers patterned after the Jensen formula for small wattge vintage type amps.
Only after Jensen was sold and they put out there life time warranty line of drivers did a Jensen driver get made with a better voice coil in terms of heat rejection, and also have a wattage rating over 40 watts.
