Hi all, I have posted here before and always gotten lots of help from everyone (how to upgrade Caps in Kustoms, where to order Naugahyde etc.). Here is my most recent quandary: I like to experiment and try different combinations of speakers. Recently while doing this I broke one of my amps. It was a solid state Yamaha, not one of my Kustoms (thankfully!) but I imagine what happened would be applicable to any amps. Heres what I did: I hooked up a tube head to a set of speakers that already had the solid state Yamaha hooked up to them. The Yamaha was plugged in, but OFF. I powered up the tube head, and really cranked the tubes and was getting a weird sort of unnatural sounding distortion. I figured the fact that the Yamaha amp was also hooked up to those same speakers might be the cause, so I turned everything off, unplugged the Yamaha from the speakers, and turned the tube head back on. Everything was back to normal. When I was done experimenting I plugged the Yamaha back in to those speakers and put the tube head away. Now the Yamaha gets no sound and blows fuses. It powers up but consistently blows fuses right away. No sound. Anybody have any idea what I fried ?? Power transformer? Output Transistors? I really did like this old Yamaha (its the model that Michael Stern and the guy from Genesis used...the G100) and I have a spare that I could use for parts if need be. As always, thanks to everyone for the help!

Hi, not to make you feel bad, but that was DUMB!Your should of checked here first and we could have told you the the hook up you did was a first rate way to blow the output transistors in the solid state amp!Your also lucky that you did not play the tube amp long enough once the Yamaha blew to take out the output transformer in the tube amp.
Now you have about a 80 dollar repair bill coming your way to get the blown amp back up and running. Rolling Eyes

I don't have a specific answer for your problem but I do know that Yamaha amps are VERY finicky about the transistors used. You need to replace them in pairs or quads depending, and they need to be matched. I tried fixing an older power amp and every time I powered up, I fried something else until I replaced all the transistors that needed replacing with the EXACT replacement part. Maybe they have gotten better over time.

Hmm, thanks for the help guys. I'll try to find replacement output transistors and see if that fixes things.

An Update: I was able to find the same brand output transistors on ebay....a pair made by Toshiba for about 9 bux.......and I put them in, replaced the blown fuse, and the amp works perfectly again! I couldn't be happier. Thanks for the help guys.
