Didn't you Kustom guys have a sort of mini-show several years ago, piggybacked onto a vintage guitar show in Nashville?
There's been interest from time to time on my combo organ group about trying to get together for a combo organ show. I was wondering how you guys arranged for that. Did it cost anything? Did you have your own special area? Is the Nashville show an annual thing, and if so, when is it?

That show was back in 2000. A bunch of the guys that used to hang out here rented space and brought their own collections of Kustom amps, organs etc. They even got Bud Ross to come as well.
Search the old posts and you'll find lots of info, as well as a really nice story of how Bud Ross walked through the entire Nashville show, seeing a few Kustoms here and there, thinking that this is what he was invited to see, only to be shocked at the roomful of tuck and roll that awaited him in the back.
I think that they tried it again in Indy, but nothing since then. It seems that a lot of those original guys are either no longer members here, or don't come by very often. Too bad, I'd love to see it happen again.

If it could be organized again here in the upper midwest, I would certainly make every attempt to attend and contribute my collection. I was not part of the original group but I now consider myself to be. I would need to work my schedule around it but I now have the means to move my collection around. I just don't think I could make Vegas or Orlando. Next summer if it works out.

I just checked several of them out, and yowza! They ain't cheap! A little 10' x 10' dealer booth goes for $250-$350.
What did you guys do in Nashville? Do they have some special deal if you just want a large space to set up and show some stuff, and aren't interested in selling anything? Who paid for it - did every one just chip in?

hey Rodak...this is ET.
I was the one that got hung with organizing the first nashville meet.
We originally had all started posting huge threads on the vintage guitar magazine website forum and finally Dan put this website up.
I had been in occasional touch with Bud back through the years and so the guys asked me if I'd check with him and see if he'd be up for a visit..which he was.
I contacted the guitar show promoter and asked how we might do this thing.. I told him I was sure there would be some horse trading among the group and that I didn't want to get on the bad side of any of our great dealers so we wanted to rent a couple booth spaces and be legit. the show guy (sorry I can't remember his name) was great...when I explained what we were trying to do, he granted us the entire back wall of the hall...which made room for over 100 kustoms 3 rows deep and about 30 feet wide !
The Show holder also notified many of the participating dealers about us so there were a number of booths that brought what kustom stuff they had too...and in fact many of our group wound up taking home pretty much anything that was kustom at the show. AT one point we made a wholesale buyout offer to one dealer for I think 5 diferent pieces..the focus of that purchase was an old old red frank head with chicken knobs and the low forehead indicating it was prereverb..a real treasure! That one got wrapped in a towel and put on the plane with Bud who did personal repairs on it before sending to JC I think it was. I snagged a 2x15 no port/no baffle port cab out of that deal..it is an early Ross rig.
I also asked guys to bring door prizes that we gave away for things like furthest traveled, etc. some made kustom clocks, etc.
I got hold of Uniroyal and they sent me a new naugha kat doll (which was also a door prize) and BC and my family went to the airport to pick up Bud..he didn't know what we looked like so I had my young daughter standing at the gate holding the Naugha..Bud had the biggest smile when he stepped off the plane and saw that...came over and gave out big hugs like he was their grandpaw.
We also took up a collection and I paid the security guard $50 to let us stay in the hall after the show closed so we could all have a jam session on the kustoms. We went to a restaurant afterwards, the to the motel's bar..the bartender literally turned out the lights and we sat there for along time afterwards just talking.
It's just a great time and I'm so glad that other guys pulled the other shows together as well.
We are doing an informal meet in nashville here on Dec 6th..not trying to bring in the big collections...many will bring a couple amps, but mostly just catching up..Bud is supposed to come as well..we'll enjoy the show, find a restaurant afterwards and likely close down a bar someplace..you get that many kustom krazies together...there's plenty to talk about!

Hi, ET: Thanks for the recap. Man, that sounds like it was a terrific time, I'm glad y'all all got to do that - a once-in-a-lifetime event, for sure.
One of these years, us combo organ guys may pull together something similar. If we do, all the Kustom guys will certainly be welcome, after all, we have a lot in common - late 60's, all solid-state circuitry, flashy colors, and much of the same music.

As a former owner of a Vox Continental organ, as well as a couple Vox amps (a Kensington Bass amp I ran the Continental through, and a Vox Buckingham I ran my Guild Starfire through after I switched to guitar), I suggest that it might be feasible to get several vintage lover groups together to do a combined show at one of the big guitar shows.
The main band I played in back in the days I was playing keyboard had all Vox equipment, 3 Super Beatles, a Winchester PA, bass player played a Vox violin bass.
Now, what does this have to do with Kustom? Well, I may have been playing on Vox amps back then, but I wanted a Kustom rig so bad I could taste it. It only took me 30 years to finally get there. I still don't have exactly what I want, but I'm getting there, one piece at a time. I just wish I could still play keyboard like I did back then. I'd love to own one of the Kustom organs.
Anyway, maybe a joint venture between Kustom players/collectors, combo organ players/collectors, Vox players/collectors, etc. might wind up creating an event like never seen before.
Depending on where it was, I know I'd love to go to it.
Just a thought.

Hi, Rob: That sounds like a great idea - I'll keep it in mind.
Funny thing - you had a Vox Continental and Vox amps - instruments that both fetch hefty sums these days, but you and I and the rest of the folks here know a Kustom Kombo played through a color-matched K200/2x15+H rig would be way cooler than any of that Vox stuff  .
The Kombos really are great. They don't have any fancy sustain or percussion effects, but they have a good selection of voices, nice vibrato, built-in reverb, and one of the beefiest, nastiest bass sections I've ever heard in a combo organ. They're not terribly common, but they're out there. Because of their size, they're rarely offered for anything but local pickup, so they can sometimes be had pretty affordably.

I can't play keys worth spit...but I do have a kombo 1... I mean...can't have a complete kollection without one eh?
for you vox guys..check in with Bryan Sawyer...big kustom fan here as well..but I believe he's got some cool vox gear too.
only vox I have are more current AC30 rigs that are in my backline rental company inventor (www.CarolinaBackline.com)
I enjoy a good class A type amp, but growing up seemed like you either snagged a fender or a kustom..there was little in between around my hood....the occasional SUNN and Acoustic stuff showed up.
I can't encourage you guys enough to do a get together around your amp interest...it was a real midlife crisis buster for me and a lot of guys that weekend and I know it was a good time for Bud too...beat the hell out of dressing up like an Andorian and going to a Star Trek conference i can tell you that (grin).
