I know both of these speakers were used in Kustom's 2x15 Cabinets.

In your opinion, How do they compare and contrast?

Thanks

I want to put a set in my empty 2x15 cabinet but want to see yalls thoughts.

I have both, and the Altec`s go up higher in frequency but are smother to my ear up in the high range.
I think it is due to the JBLs 4" VC cover and the Altec`s 3" one.

15" drivers tend to beam the highs more(just a common fact as all drivers get larger) but as I listen to each driver and move my listening point, the Altecs seem to do the beam thing less.

Both drivers are Alnico magnet type so they compress at high volume levels in a nice way also, meaning there dynamic range is smother than a ciramic magnet driver.

I agree with Steve 100% as I have both ans JBL D140's and Altec 421's as well. If you really want to tame down the JBL's what they normally do is take the aluminum dust cover off and install a paper one. It doesn't look nearly as cool, but they sound a lot better.

I have my siren cabs loaded with Altec 418's and use them as PA mains and they sound beautiful. I have a K200A-2 head in red with the red 2 x 15 cab that came with Altec 418's and the same thing it sounds beautiful. I have a K200B-2 with a JBL 2 x 15 loaded with D140's and it sounds great for a bass cab, not so much for guitar. If I were to install the D130's it would be more of a guitar cab. I have 3 extra Kustom stamped Altec 16 Ohm 418's and need one more to complete a project if anyone has one I would be interested in it.

The Altec 418's and 421's aluminum dust cover is about .90 thick the only way you would ever dent it is with a hammer. I think this is the difference between the JBL and the Altec and the JBL covers are thin and you can dent them with your finger.
