Were the casters just mounted straight into the bottom of the cabinets on the corners or did they have metal plates screwed to the bottom of the cabinets, front to back, with the casters mounted to the plates?

Thanks.

Not sure about the speaker cabs, but on the Kombo I organ, they were mounted on plates.

Are you the Milo who owns a Kombo I in Cascade (and also a member of the combo organ group)?

Nope, that's not me. I wish I could play keyboards.

On the Kombos did they look like long aluminum (?) plates mounted to the bottom with a lot of wood screws and then have studs sticking through (toward the ground) that the casters mounted over using a nut to retain them? I'm trying to determine if a cabinet I'm looking at is original or if somebody came up with a fix for casters that had pulled out.

Did they use regular casters with a normal type of wheel, the round ball type of casters, or both types depending on when the cabinets were made? The catalogs look like the round ball style but I can't tell for sure.

Yes, that's pretty much exactly how I remember it. Can't remember if the plates were aluminum or steel (I'd have to haul it out and up-end it to be sure).

As far as I know, they all had the ball casters, which, imho, was just part of the coolness factor. For the first home-brew speaker cabinet I made, I got ball casters, primarily because I'd seen them on the Kustoms, and figured that would be the way to go.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't tell for sure if the plates were aluminum or galvanized steel but they didn't oxidize like the casters and nuts. It looked a little too good to be a home made fix with the studs being countersunk from the top of the plates, but all of the screws into the bottom of the cabinet looked a little bit on the homemade side. The fact that it has "regular" wheeled casters instead of the ball casters also made me wonder if it was just a home brew fix for originals that had pulled out.

The casters seem to be pretty hefty and have been on the amp for quite some time judging by the aging. Is it safe to assume the mounting plate system is original and the casters are replacements that happened to fit the hole pattern? I'm trying to determine if the price needs to be adjusted for non-original mods.

I'd say that's a safe assumption. I don't think I've ever seen a Kustom T&R cabinet with anything other than ball casters.

I will ditto that I have never seen anything other than ball castors on original Kustom equipment. I usually use them whenever I build cabinets that require castors. I prefer ball type cause I think they roll better...they certainly LOOK better.

I have owned some kustom cabinetss that didn't have the caster plate and most that did. I had a pair of siren cabinets with a K200A pa head that didn't have the caster plates. Kustom added the plates very quickly on all their cabinets that had casters. The ball casters were standard for kustom and narrow wheels with caster platess for the kasino's. I have seen a few of the Frankie cabinets with caster plates and that may have been added after the fact. It just made good sense to use the plates to insure that the casters stayed in place and didn't pull loose or the screws vibrating out.

Thanks for all the info.

From what you guys are saying it sounds like this cabinet probably had the plates, or somebody added OEM plates after the fact. Maybe it got the Kasino casters by mistake (if they were the same hole pattern) or somebody just had to replace broken ball casters. I'm less concerned with different casters being added to an original plate than if the whole thing was homemade and screwed on. I didn't see any signs of torn out screws or covering on the bottom corners.

I'm just trying to figure out what I'm willing to pay if things aren't original. It already has a speaker in it that appears to be a Kustom 15" except that the chrome dust cover is solid while the other one has the hole.

When Kustomaholic had me ship his cute blue sparkly cab in April I got a good look at the setup. I noticed it was a plate connected with a plethora of screws that might have suspended it from the ceiling if one was interested in doing that. They are the round, enclosed type of casters, and imho, a much better setup than these new plastic ones.

In Shrewsbury, MA, there's a Kustom 1x18 bass cab (not my thing) that someone had attached wheels to the back. Note, I didn't say casters. You can wheel it around as if you were the fed ex guy...
