Power Transformer needed for solid state Lead II [message #13844]

I have been searching for a power transformer for my 1978 Lead II. The fuse blew and I took it to be repaired and they said the transformer/ power supply was burned out. Any suggestions?

I've never seen a dead power transformer in a Kustom amp, but there could always be a first time.

I would suggest having the transformer checked before doing anything else. Maybe there is another shop near you to get a second opinion.

How handy are you?

well Im fairly handy I heard the transformer sizzling pretty good when the fuse was jumped... powered up but started to burn...could it be something else?

Well, now that you've described the sizzle it probably is cooked. By jumped the fuse, do you mean that you ran it with a jumper rather than a fuse to protect the amp? I guess that you could still test the transformer to be certain though.

Finding a suitable replacement would not be impossible, but I would think that you could buy either a working or a dead chassis cheaper than what it would cost to buy a Hammond or other brand replacement.

If you tell us what PC boards are in your amp, we may be able tell you some of the other Kustom amps that used the same transformer to help you in your quest.

ok how do I tell which boards are installed? I have it opened up so Everything is visible...i have also been looking for an early solid state donor but nothing has turned up yet...

Your amp is likly to have a blown output stage also which is what blew the fuse, if this is the case than the cost of a new 50 dollar power transfomer and for a tech to repair the output stage may put you into the price range of another used lead II that works already.
