Hello,

I would appreciate any info that may be provided on repairing my Kustom K200B-1 head. I just started noticing a hiss when I turn it on coming from the speakers, and when I turn it off there is a pop which is reminiscent of some other amps that I have owned. Now for the other amps it was my understanding that the pop was normal when I inquired, but with the Kustom this just started happening. It happens even if I have vol turned down, another thing I noticed was that as i turn up the treble knob more noise is introduced and also a semi distorted sound is produced very marshallish. It almost seems like the treble knob is acting exactly like a gain function by adding distortion and noise but in a good noisy way. The cabinet I use is a Sunn 312s 6ohms, I believe it was the matched cabinet for the Sunn Sceptre. I would also like to know which components would be a good idea to replace due to the amps age for maintenance and upkeep. Like some other noisy amps should this Kustom produce some hiss through speakers when turned on and pop when turned off? and if so why am I noticing it now after having it for 2.5yrs. As always this site is wonderful, full of knowledge and just the best resource for Kustom amps. Thanking you in advance for any and all info.

Hello and welcome.
The pop sound when you turn your amp off is somewhat normal for its age and its due to the two main 50 volt 4500 mfd power supply filters showing their age.
Replacing them would be a good idea although I have never seen them just out and out fail by shorting and blown the amps fuse.
Your hiss can be due to many things and needs to be pinned down if it is comeing more from each preamp of the driver section of the output stage, and this hiss could be a combination of noisy transistors and the tantalum type caps that are used in some spots in these amps.
When these caps age then can short and or go up in mfd value which would increase the gain in the given circuit and make for added hiss.
