Well, I was playing my A-4 head the other day through my 74 Hondo II guitar (no comments from the peanut gallery) and I was just getting fed up with the tone quality and lack of volume. I took the guitar into my basement and took it apart to find the connections between the volume controls and the pickups were barely touching.
Guitar gods everywhere, laugh
So I decided to clean out the guitar input jack, and then went back upstairs to clean out the head. Then I got a reply from a guy I'd spoken to on Craigslist who had the old 60's coily guitar cables. 5$ each. What a steal!
Sooo... After picking up the cables, I brought them home and plugged them into the head, guitar, and turned it on. Much to my ear's discomfort I'd forgotten to turn down the guitar head. My 80 year old father was down the street at the time, and he heard the explosion from down there. He turned to the house, turned to the neighbor he'd been speaking to and said 'Okay, time to go kill my son.'
What a difference in tone and volume! Has anyone had a similar experience? The old cables seem to really be worth their weight... I now officially look like John Fogerty with the 10 foot cable about ready to be pulled out of the amp!
