i have a k100 bass amp with a 2x15 cab. i want to replace both speakers with 2 eminence delta 15 8 ohm speakers. they are rated at 400 watts rms. are these too much for a 50 watt k100 head to handle? is this overkill or would they make my amp kick butt?
come on GODESS i know you have the answer.

The speaker power rating is only the maximum the speaker is rated to handle - anything less is fine. I have two Delta 15's in my Kustom Kombo organ, and while I haven't experimented too much with it, they do seem to sound very good, both for organ and bass.
One thing to consider: If you ONLY plan to drive the one 2x15 cab, then the 8ohm versions will let the amp produce it's max rated power (and that's a good thing!). If you ever plan to drive TWO 2x15 cabs, then you should get the 16ohm version of the speaker (The Delta's are one of the few in that line that come in a 16ohm flavor).

Whoops guys!! The K100 is only rated at 8 Ohms not 4 like the K200. You should run 2 16 ohm speakers in parallel or 2-4 ohm in series. And I agree, the max power is not really an issue here. As long as you don't exceed the max ratings you wil be alright. I routinely run 4 - 200 RMS watt rated JBL speakers at 1700 watts for my PA. No problems. Any good SPL (sound pressure level) speakers will fit the bill. 98 dB or greater.

thanks for the reply. last year when i rebuilt my amp i tried 2 15 inch weber california blues speakers at 16 ohms each wired in parallel.they start clipping at about 1/2 volume. i got a price yesterday at parts express.com of $75.74 ea. for the eminence delta 15's 8 ohms. i will try the website you suggested and see how their prices are. once again thanks for your help.

hi conrad
what if i get the 2 eminence delta 15's at 8 ohms each and then run them in parallel to get 4 ohms and then run a 4 ohm resistor in series with the speakers to bring it back up to 4 ohms. would that work? i always thought the k 100 could run at 4 ohms but i guess i dont want to take a chance and blow the head.

Doesn't quite work that way. Even if you could find an 8ohm, 50-watt resistor (it'd be HUGE), all it would do would be to soak up half the amp's power (might make a nice hand-warmer for outdoor winter gigs, though!), while the speakers turned the other half into actual sound. No, the way to go is DEFINITELY to get the proper speakers for the amp you want to use. If a K100 works best into 8ohms, then you need two 16ohm speakers in parallel, or two 4ohms in series. The Delta's are available in 16ohms, and the price is the same as for 8. I don't even know if they make 4ohm speakers. Check with Bernie at bltsound (tell him Robert sent you). I bet he can beat PartsExpress's price, and I know he has the 16ohm models available.
BTW, does anyone know if any of the current Eminence line is the exact equivalent to the Carvin PS-15's? I'm pretty sure they used to be just OEM'd from Eminence, but I don't know if that's still the case.

I have run 100 heads at 4 ohms with no problems so far....and I know guys who routinely run 200 heads at 2 ohms with no problems other than increased heat generation......this does not mean it is a good idea....just some experience. BC

Two ohms in the 200 is probably Ok if you don't push it hard and I dout you do. As the two load is gonna produce a louder response. Therefore there is usually less need to turn the amp up.
Probably somewhere around three would be all thats needed in most situations. I would'nt as a matter of routine use much louder than that.
I use to use a Fender Bassman with two Bassman cabs at two ohms for lead but I never ran over four and I only used it that way at gigs where I need the greater sound dispersion.
