I've got a '68 Ross, Inc. no name identity speaker jack plate with original CTS 16 ohm speakers. I use it with the matching Kustom head and another 8 ohm cab for a total of 4 ohms. I've thought of putting the upgrade JBL D140Fs or Altec 421As in the cab. Problem is, most of those speakers that I see are 8 ohms. I'd need 16 to keep the total at 8 per cab. I'm guessing that Kustom used 16 ohm since they offered 2 cabs with this head with the JBL option based upon the cataloges. What are the chances of finding 16 ohms in either the JBL or Altec? Are there other options in my situation?

Your right, all Kustom K200 series amps used 16 ohm speakers regardless of brand. Finding original Kustom installed JBL or Altec might be a task. My bass player has a 2x15 kustom cab loaded with JBL D140 ohm speakers for a 4 ohm load. Sounds killer with just one cab in any venue we've played in including outdoor gigs. He also has a pair of 2x15 cabs loaded with the original CTS 16 ohm speakers, and that amp rocks. You might get a pair of 8 ohm JBL's a lot cheaper and quicker than trying to find them in 16 ohms. One thing to keep in mind if you do find some JBL's the + side of JBL causes the cone to move inward, most every other brand speakers, the + terminal the cone moves outwards, so mixing two different brands of speakers, you'll want to make sure all speakers move in the same direction.

You will not find Altec 421's in 16ohm. I have looked and looked and never found one, only 8 and 4 ohm. The 16ohm JBL's you find will have the Kustom stamp on 90% of them. That is what I have found. I have a pair in a cab and a pair of D-130 16 ohm in boxes that have Kustom stamps on them, but have been saving them as they are expensive to replace.
