I know the great Jamerson generally used the Ampeg Fliptop in the studio but preferred a Kustom rig for live playing. Off hand I don’t know which Kustom he had and would like to hear a little bit about how that particular amp sounds, as well as some technical stuff concerning watts, etc.

Does that mean you don't know which amp he used or that you know what he used but don't know anything about the amp itself?

Thanks Steve. I'll try and find out which model it was and post. Maybe you'll be able to tell me something about it. I'm pretty sure whatever head it was he ran it thru a 2x15 cabinet.

Looks like it was a B200 w/ a 2x15 cabinet.

"Live, he’d use his Ampeg B-15 or blue Kustom 200 with two 15s, and he would turn the amp almost all the way up, so he could control the volume and dynamics from his P-Bass and with his fingers. His strings were dead flatwounds, and his action was so high, you had to get your friend to help you play Bb!"

What can you tell me about the Kustom 200? Power, sound, tube, solid state, etc. Was the preamp similar to any other Kustom models?

The K 200B is solid state 100 watt RMS into 4 ohm head. Preamp wise to me its a little briter sounding in its normal channel than the earlyer A serise head or the first serise frank head.
Output stage wise for guitar it will produce a decent crunch sound when it starts to distort, but when driven harder it clips different than the earlyer heads and has a unpleasentness to its tone.

I guess so, as I currenly have 5 of these amps and I played bass for many years in the late 60s and early 70s with my k200b 3-15" amp untill I traded in that model for what was Kustoms new K250 model back then.

Steve do you still like it as a bass amp? 100 watts doesn't seem like much these days but its been my experience that watt ratings tended to be more conservative back in the old days.
