Well the wire must have come lose again on my Charger. I called NY Speaker works and was told it would cost me $150-200 to recone my speaker.For that price would it be better to buy a new speaker? what speaker would you guys recommend?How will a different speaker affect the tone of my amp?I really like the sound of the original(when it works).I have to figure in travel (about an hour each way) or shipping to get it there.

If it's just a wire that's loose, you don't need a recone. Reattaching one or both of the "wires" should be fairly cheap. I'm guessing less than $50.00. If it does need rebuilding, making that decision would be influenced by whether it's the original, or, an original speaker for the cab and how you like the sound. I always prefer to use original and recone/rebuild. In fact, I'm in the process of "upgrading" my '68 2-15 cab to original correct JBL D140Fs. I just got the first one back from The Speaker Doctor after a checkup including new cone and aluminum dust cap. It looks good. Cool

one of the wires on the voice coil broke.I had it soldered but the guy said it might or might not hold. As far as I can tell it's the original speaker.

I just took the speaker out of the cabinet it's a KEI speaker. I also found the name Stan written on the inside of the cabinet next the speaker. Is that who built the amp?

Hi.. thought I would chime in with my take on it..Recone would be a good way to go to maintain originality. How ever ..I recently got an estimate on a recone locally for around 85... It was on a CTS 12" but I don't imagine that much difference in price for a 15" ... Speakerworks,Tulsa,OK does my work and has been outstanding and troublefree on the 5 he's done for me. My Charger came with an Eminence replacement speaker made for Crate...Similar to the PS15 Carvin sells. It sounds fantastic. I replaced the original KEI on my 1st Charger in 1975 with an EV
SRO15. If I were going to replace the speaker today I would choose one of the 15" Neo speakers to save some weight. Make sure you get an 8 ohm driver to correctly match impedance. Hope you get the speaker problem "fixed". If I had gotten that Blue Charger it would have been at the Chanute Kollector Konvention last week instead of my current Charger...Great Show!!! Very Happy

I'm glad somebody brought up the cost of the recone. I wouldn't want to move anyone off a guy they like - But $150-$200 PLUS shipping seemed out of line. I've purchased reconed Altec's for $150 and that included the basket. Just my 2 cents.

Try the Eminence delta 15A Spl 100 db 40-4k hertz at 89.97 from partsexpress.com. Part # 290-418. Should be a good choice for a Charger and certainly more efficient than the KEI driver and at about the same cost as a reasonable recone. I have a Similar model in mine tho I have never tried to find out exactly what the equivalent Crate ## is. Wish I knew exactly which Eminence model it corosponds to but I am delighted with the sound..I tried a JBL D140 but liked the newer Eminence "sound" better.....
Preferences are subjective so...best of luck on whatever you choose to do....Parts Express has a smorgasboard of 15"s to choose from so something should be suitable. Very Happy

If you have ever use epoxy to build a model and can use a automotive type gasket scraper, you can recone a speaker as their is no magic to it.
Call up simply speakers and they can sell you a kit and you will be back up and running for well under 150 bucks and for just 2 hours of your time!

I found a guy to take my speaker to.He said the flexible wire coming from the voice coil(I forget the technical term)but it half copper and half cloth was broke. He is going to replace the wire without having to recone the speaker.I'm pretty new to all this so I'm not quite sure about it. He told me if it didn't work he would recone tit for under a hundred bucks.He said that it looked like it had been reconed before. The cone and foam were in really good shape.Does anyone know about the name Stan inside the amp?

Thats called a tinsel type wire and you need really need solder with a high silver content to make a good connection that will hold, so if that tech who soldered it for you used regular electronic solder thats why it did not hold.
