4x12 cabinet repair [message #13116]

I've purchased above cabinet. One speaker is defect. Anyone able to determine from the serial what speakers should be in there?

Is this a particle board cabinet?

Any other thing I should know?

Is it possible to purchase new speaker cloth so I can redo it to make it look nice again?

I do hope this is not a cabinet with a TWEETER. As that would be bad.

Hi Muziekschuur,
When you remove the back you can see what speakers are in it – for CTS the number will start with “137”, Eminence “67", or Rola “285”.
It is hard to tell from the picture - but the two speakers that are mounted might not be the original speakers.
As far as I know, cabinets from that time period (1974 to 1976) sometimes used particle board. It does not have a horn.
You can get grille cloth from Parts Express – not sure if they sell in The Netherlands –
go to http://www.broadwaymusicco.com/kustom3.htm (mid 1970’s) to see how the grill cloth looked from this era.
Are you using this cabinet for guitar, or for bass?
This is a guitar cabinet, but it is very easy to convert a 4x12 guitar cabinet to a bass cabinet.

Judging from that era cabinet,and from the shape of the speakers basket and the silver color I would say that they are the original drivers to the cabinet and that they are stamped 67 for being Eminence made.

I am really happy then.

Was it allways a mono cab?

I'll probably add two (or three) connectors in order to use it as stereo or as wet dry wet.

Someone here mentioned a conversion to use it for bass would be easy. I think that would be done by changing the backplate to a closed back? Am I correct?

Yes, these wher only made in mono form.

If you convert it to stereo what amp will you power it with?, as a amp with a tube output stage needs to be macthed for the different impeadance of how you rewire the cabinet.

Powering it with a solid state amp will eitheir cut in half or double the amps power it can put out.
A solid state amp rated at 50 watts into 8 ohms will output 100 watts into a 4 ohm load, or 25 watts into a 16 ohm load.

A tube amp will output the most watts and have the best tone when it is for example, made for a 8 ohm load and driving a 8 ohm load.
The stock speakers can handle bass for a low volume recorcding project, but for playing live they would need to be changed out for true bass drivers and 4 out of the six rear ports should atleast be closed off.

The stcok speakers roll off freuqency wise by 70 hz, a true bass driver will go down to 40hz which is whats needed to carry the low E string well in a live playing situation.

I have some Celestion Classic Lead speakers here in 16 ohm. So I can drive two channels with a Trace Elliot GRP3 (wich is a 2x16ohm mosfet system) and the mono center channel with a Peavey tube combo or maybe another lill head (20 watts).

Left and right will be wet (with reverb, chorus, etc) Center will be dry but will contain overdrive, distortion, wah and maybe other effects.

Welcome, to the site. The cabinet is the lead 3. It originally came with 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel for a 4 ohm load to the Lead lll head.
Kustom made two different 4x12 cabinets, the one you have and the Bass lV cabinet that could be ordered with the EV SRO speakers. The bass cabinet was a closed back and the cabinet was divided and sealed between the top two speakers and the bottom two speakers. The cabinet was front vented both top and bottom and had two speaker jacks on the back. The Bass lV head had two 135 watt power amps and required two speaker cords from the amp to the cabinet. In the lV bass cabinet Kustom used 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel to get two 4 ohm speaker outs for the amp. As far as I can remember, Kustom stock speakers were KEI branded and used square magnets, baskets were black.

I forgot, if those speakers do not have aluminum voice coil covers than they are not orignal to te cabinet.
